It is the book we are studying in our first Saturday night of the month men's group. It is written by Patrick Morley. They were on chapter two when I came in. We didn't meet last time because of the ice storm. I was told I could take a copy home. I will probably try to read some of it tonight at work if I get a chance. According to Jack Eckerd, Founder of Eckerd Drug Stores it is thoughtful and practical.

I was surprised to see a quote by Plato, "The life which is unexamined is not worth living" followed by Lamentations 3:40, "Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord." That starts chapter two. I have always been fond of Plato. I think I have found my niche as a Socratic Christian even though it is through his pupil Plato.

I got to read some of it last night at work. Chapter One starts with the wicked stepmother and Snow White where the famous lines of Mirror Mirror on the wall. The author talks about how vain the stepmother was first with Snow White and was mad at the mirror because it gave a true reflection. He ties that in with the unexamined life. On the front cover of the book its shows a man looking at himself in the mirror. From his point of view we have to able to face the man in the mirror. I was reminded of Michael Jackson's song by the same name while reading the book. It really is a fascinating book because you get the idea Patrick Morley actually continue a book his grandfather started. If nothing else it got me into reading again. On the front cover it covers 24 things men as Christians have problems with. As you can tell I am fascinated with the book.

The first chapter is entitled, "The Rat Race". I like his quotations as they seemingly come from nowhere.

Like a rat in a maze, the path before me lies. Simon and Garfunkle

Then he gives the verse Galatians 5:7 You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth.

I like the way he does that of given a quotation and then a verse. I think it is going to be a common theme. He gives a fictitious example of the rat race and then on page 23 asks these questions:

What is the purpose of my life?
Why do I exist?
How do I find meaning?
How do I satisfy my need to be significant?
Why are my relationships in a shambles?
How did I get so far in debt?
Who am I trying to please anyways?
How did I get caught up in the rat race in the first place?
