Topic: "Hon" and "Dear" terms

I like those terms to be used only by the person with whom i'm involved romantically.

I'll give southerners the benefit of the doubt, however, because I realize some of them use those words regularly and generally. If it's anyone else, it creeps me out.
It took me a concerted effort to remove those terms from my common language. When I realized people could find offense with them that is . . . My mother was born and raised in Savannah Georgia and its just a part of life there. (at least when she grew up there)

Thank you Penny. It's nice to meet you. I'm glad I'm not alone on this. It would be different if maybe I got a feel for a person here first, rather than them emailing you, starting with, "Hon", wouldn't it?

Eek. Y'all would hate me. Ha ha.

I tend to use it if I feel comfortable with that person, even if I just met them. If the situation seems appropriate (especially if I'm being sarcastic), I always throw one of those terms in there. Ha ha.

Exactly, Linda. It's not that I am averse to those terms being used on me, it's just that to me...they are familiar terms, and to be used after getting to know someone...not as icebreakers towards that end. I will admit that I use the term sir alot when addressing men online, but I find that neither familiar NOR derogatory! I have gotten some flack for its usage, but....LOL!

Maybe the flack comes from them wanting to know you better and they think it's too formal...or maybe it's like people calling us Ma'am. Some of us feel really old when they call us that.

I totally agree, but I also realize that if I am going to call them sir, most times I am going to get the ma'am thing in return....usually NOT out of respect....LOL! I've had some guys go berserk on me for saying sir...even once. At that point, I know for certain I would not match well with them...and I move on. I am not Miss Manners, by any stretch of the imagination, but I do like to show respect when chatting with new people, and I don't like to have to use their name every time....I suppose the same COULD be said for those who choose to use those....'terms of endearment...."....

We like everyone here. Don't worry, you're still young and maybe reading the posts and asking questions, will help you.

You shouldn't feel old when people call you ma'am. Or for guys, sir. I think those are terms of respect for people in general, not for respect as elders. I'm student teaching in a 6th grade geography class. And every little 11 year old girl and boy get ma'ams and sirs from me.

Good for you! I'm glad to see respect is still being taught in school somewhere.

When it come to a line i dont use Hey baby whats up that sounds pushy
i would rather say Hey how you doing or whats your name. As for calling someone baby i would have to say they were with me as a couple.
