I'm thinking about moving to australia in about a year and a half - two years (when I'm done with school) I've been doing alot of research and Perth seems like a nice city. I'm looking to find out the basics of living there.....cost? crime rates? best and worst places to live? etc.... I figured an Australian forum would be a good way to get the facts! If anyone can help it would be great!
Thanks y'all!!

I have yet to venture to the east coast yet but from what everyone has been telling me Melbourne is a lot better than Sydney. I guess it depends on what you are looking for.

I'm in Perth and have found it to be a nice clean city that is pretty low on crime and has lots of lovely beaches. Dispite what some people say there is plenty to do if you look in the right place. The pace of life here is quite a bit slower than the rest of the world. WA = Wait Awile is a common saying.
One thing to remember is that Perth is the most remote city in the world so if you want to visit another city it's going to be atleast a 4hour flight(dont quote me on that).

Cost of living? The average income is around $800 AU a week...innercity housing is expensive anything upard of $350 a week...crime? It is subjective, depending on what city, what area... and what time of day or night.

I live in a coastal town 6 hours north of brisbane... with almost zero crime... I have lived here 23 years and NEVER locked my doors, and my car keys live in my car...never had anything stolen... rarelysee acts of violence publicly... sadly statistically domestic violence is the same as anywhere else.

As to perth... the northern suburbs... Peppermint grove, Scarborough are great... the train line is right there, to take you into the city...Perth is a cruisy city, well planned, well organised with a great infrastructure, ie public transport system.... it's a beautiful city... and amazingly diverse suburbs.

Perth is very isolated from the rest of Australia...but WA has everything you need anyways....

Where I am??

We are a nation of immigrants... all of us other than Indigenous Australians, come from somewhere else...

we are a multi culture... so Aussies like Yanks....if they are normal everyday people who don't have a stick up their arse and a superiority complex... however, that goes for any immigrant from any other country.

i am originally from New Zealand and have been in Queensland for 15 years. Can't add much but I love the East Coast.
I think there are much more opportunities in Aussie.Plenty of work, sunshine, beaches, wildlife , a few lowlife but no more than anywhere else.
I haven't taken the key out of my car since i left Hamilton island.

Jess, I like the statement about...if you don't have a stick...laugh where do you live( guessing gladstone?)

Australis is the place to be, and the best place in Australia is Melbourne ( sorry to all the other citys) Most people in Perth go to bed at 9, anyone awake after that is either robbing, stealing or raping, After living in Perth for 2 years couldn't stand it any more and now live in melbourne and work in far north WA. The 110000 klm trip is worth it.Cost of living is cheaper etc, and Melbourne was voted 2nd most livable city on the planet!!!!!

Can only say from a west australian point of view (even thou i'm south australian) that perth is not the place to live, but just out of perth is good, i live 1hr south of perth and then 15mins away from what used to be a small town, big city probs dont make it down here too much and rent is cheap!! there are kangaroos everywhere and 1 that is in our yard everyday, for some reason it loves bread, i pay $230 a week for a fairly nice 3 bdrm house i have a 3 min walk to beach and 10 min drive to work and shops (wow writing it down it really makes me think i'm pretty lucky) i guess i am!!!!!! smokin

What lame research. Perth has a higher crime rate then Sydney. I prefer Canberra, it's alot safer then all other cities (from experience) but housing is a bit expensive. Sydney is good for apartments, Melbourne good for the coast. It does depend on what you do for work, what you want in your surroundings. I'd rather live in Melbourne or Brisbane or Adelaide or Sydney then Perth.

P.S. Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane have the best public transport. Canberra only has the busses and taxis.

hmmmm well basically most of us love whereever we live in australia,

i lived in NSW dubbo on a farm for a lot of my life, it was a great place

Then down the south coast.

Now in Darwin up in the NT, have loved everyone of the places I have lived, everywhere the people where friendly. There was work in each place I have lived, although as normal the bigger the place the more work.

I think wherever you go will be fine, escept for the bigger cities I dont think most places have major crime, I dont lock my car and dont often remeber to lock my home, without someone else does. and so far my car is still sitting outside.

As nlong as you come over here and are happy to fit in and enjoy our country we will love you.
