I have one to make a quick escape should the need arise

being a broke college kid...the need for a passport, and the subsequent funds needed to get one, haven't arisen yet.

although, i do want to go on a mission trip with my church, meaning i would indeed need one...

Now you need one to go to Canada or Mexico. If you ever might need to leave our borders it is required and they take about 6-8 weeks to get.

far as i know, you have always needed one to go to canada

but i have never had a passport

Nope, just since 9/11.. I've been to 20 or so countries, and never had one  US Army. I just got mine in the mail 2 weeks ago.

I have one! Unfortunately, so far, I've only used it getting into Canada. Hopefully I'll use it a lot more in the future, though.

I have one, it expires in 2011 and has a face that reminds me of Charles Manson when he had a beard. It's well used, with lots of pretty stamps.

Sooner than you think it will be the Required Form of ID for travel within the USA.

Why do you think that, M. Michiganman?

Why do you think that, M. Michiganman?

The required documments for ID keep getting stricter, and soon in the name of National Security, internal travel within the borders will be tightly regulated.

Yes, they have been getting more strict with requiring a birth certificate to renew the driver's license. I also had to get my child a state ID to fly on a plane with me. Had to prove child belonged to me.

But to the point of your question.... many Americans never travel farther than the next state over. Here in Kansas I know people that haven't even left the state and have no desire to see new places or meet new people. It almost scares me because I just don't get it. But even in my corporate office environment, less than half the people have ever left the country and of those that have, it's mostly been Canada, Mexico, or U.S. territories in the Caribbean.

Wahey! someone actually responded to my post rather than just the title!

I can understand, to a degree, why Americans don't need to travel abroad. You live in a large country with varying climates, cultures, custons etc. I have seen 5 or 6 different states and they have mostly been very different to each other(except for maybe MD and VA, i couldnt tell the difference!).

I cannot understand never leaving the same state. But then i am sure many Brits have never been abroad either. I think it is worse in the US though.

When I lived in Texas, it actually suprised me how many had never even seen an ocean. They have an ocean there too, and had never seen it. I'm in Miami now...lemme just say I moved outta Texas because I needed my ocean.
