As person who works in the film business, I can pretty much tell you that the situation might be a little more complicated than that.

For all we know, they might have been working until the wee hours of the night, doing over eighteen hour nights. When you're working those kinds of lame hours, tempers are going to flare (I know because I've been guilty of such outbursts at times), and the LAST thing you want is for some techie to go mulling about while a scene is being filmed, essentially spoiling it.

When that happens, it means that the scene has to be cut, re-set with any props, make-up effects, and pyrotechnic effects that had been fired off in the previous take, and lighting cues put back to their opening marks. Such processes can take up to several hours to accomplish, which can add strain to an already strained day or night of work...

Add to that the lack of professionalism present in the business as well- it used to be that the crew would stand still and be completely silent while the actors did their job. No one did a thing until the director called "cut", as the actors needed their concentration when performing.

Nowadays, most crews wouldn't think twice about powering up their saws or doing loud work while the actors try to perform. Not only is it unprofessional, but it's also rather inconsiderate as well.

While I don't like the EXTENT to which Bale went off the way he did, I CAN understand it, at least to a point.
