Topic: Parents of a child with ADHD | |
---|---|
I'd love to hear from the parents out there raising a child with ADHD. I have a 10 yr old son that was diagnosed with it at the age of 5. He is on medication and it helps tremendously. It took a few years of adjusting and readjusting to get it right although.
What have been some of your experiences good and bad? Any helpful advice you can offer those that are new to this kind of situation. If I could offer any advice it would be educate yourself as much as possible. And what works for one child may not necessarily work for another. There are goin to be good days and bad. Treasure the good ones so that you can get through the bad. Find supportive friends who will be there to listen when you have a bad one. |

This is a wonderful idea to start a support thread for parents with child(ren) with ADHD. I am a parent and social work student. I have an educational background in child psychological disorders. So if anyone needs any information about meds or therapies or about the condition, please feel free to contact me or ask on the thread.

smack the child with a ruler like the nuns have done for decades...seems to work....without meds...

Ever have someone tell you that all your child needs is a good swat on the butt when they act up? And that person has absolutely no idea what ADHD is all about nor has any firsthand experience with it. Don't know about the rest of you but makes me wanna pound the person on the top of their uneducated ignorant head and tell "mind ur business"

Unfortunately it doesn't work for all. I've had to use meds and a diet change. He's now a brillant student who gets straight A's and has been on the superindendants list 3 years running and he's been in the gifted students program for 2 years now. |

Violent????
What the problem....????? ???? your Original post asked for experiences good or bad..... when one is offered you decide to attack the person.....that provided what you asked for... Maybe you should be on some sort of drug as well???? Just a thought.. smack the child with a ruler like the nuns have done for decades...seems to work....without meds... consider urself pounded on the head |

Have any first hand experience with a child that does? If you did then you would have the experience to know that smackin a child that has this condition is the farthest thing from the correct way to handle them. Smackin a child is not the answer to getting any child to behave, ADHD or not. |

what did he take? i saw a friend of mine give her 2 boys Rydalin (sp) and they were zoned out of life in general. He's taking Adderall XL 20 mg in the morning. It works beautifully for him. He's not zoned out at all. It keeps him at a nice even keel so that he has no problems with his attention while in school. Most times on the weekend I don't give it to him. It took lots of adjusting and readjusting to get the right level for him. Alot of parents don't realize that it takes that to get the meds right if that's the route you decide to take. |

first you bonk me on the head... now berating me.....
You chose not to inquire further but to espouse your personal opinions as fact.... and show your true colors..... 40 years ago this is "how it was"...there were no labels... there were no meds .......that is my experience.....which, by the way, you ask for in your OP....... Again, possibly med might work for you.....just a though!! |

Again, possibly med might work for you.....just a though!! How exactly was I berating you? I asked you a couple questions and then gave you my opinion which I have garnered after years of dealing with people who have no experience whatsoever dealing with a child that has this condition. You had the unfortunateness to give the same solution as so many do that have no idea whatsoever how to deal with these children. You never answered my question, any experience or how about college education concerning this condition? And the comment about wanting to pound those on the head for saying just smack the child was meant to be metaphoric. I wouldn't resort to violence. When you've had to deal with these kind of responses for years and know first hand that such a thing doesn't work you tend to get fed up with hearing it. |

your implication was that I had no knowledge of this subject ....and that if I had I would view things as you do......your past experiences have made you somewhat jaded and caustic,,out of reflex.....it appears....

oh and....I did not give a "solution" I gave an experience....you chose to personalize it as a suggestion...

And still u don't answer the question, do you even have any firsthand experience or formal education on the condition? And yes past experiences have made me somewhat jaded. Especially when I'm told for the uptenth time the best way to get my child to act "normal" is to smack him. |

Perhaps, this question would have been more appropriate before you bonked me on the head.....metaphorically.........

How u figure this is sharing an experience? When you deal with kind of response on a pretty much constant basis, U tend to be quick to bonk, metaphorically that is. |
