Topic: How do YOU define Freedom?

Having done some time as a young man, I'm tempted to say being able to walk outside and see the stars. But thats awfully incomplete.

Maybe freedom is being able to say what you feel, wherever you please or better yet, just having a voice that does matter.

Cheesy as it sounds, and as imperfect as it is, being an American is about all the freedom one can hope for. And it may be getting better.

There have been times when I thought freedom ment being mobile. The world feels really small when you can't get out of a hospital bed, or a wheelchair, or a house. Thankfully a computer can bring the world to some people but that really isn't freedom unless they can go to the world. Think about that when you make the world inaccessible to someone.

Freedom is the right to be yourself, live your life, take care of your family, choose your vocation, spouse and church, etc.

It is also the right not to hurt others by insisting on your own rights, like the freedom of speech that so many are proud of when they use it to insult others and so forth.

There is four or five of her threads she bumps all day long. It's rather annoying when there are new threads to tend to and they get pushed down. No offense to anyone, just let a thread die if nobody is posting in it. No need to keep bumping it up if the only person posting is the OP.

People from all around the world congregate on this site & so i thought it would be an interesting topic. How do you define it & what does it mean to you? flowerforyou

I've been in jail several times, so im an expert on the subject. When you think in terms of something like a government telling you what you can and cannot do, that is nothing compared to being locked up in a cage.
To me, freedom is being able to walk out the door, hop in my truck or on my trike, and go anywhere I wish, anytime I wish.

Freedom means I don't have to answer this question.

Freedom of speech, and honesty is very important to me. If I don't like someone, or I don't like something they do, I tell it like it is, and if they, or anyone else doesn't like it, thats too damm bad. At the same time, if someone insults me, for instance, because I smoke pot, or because I don't believe in god, I could care less, and it certainly doesn't hurt my feelings. How can someone possibly hurt your feelings, unless you believe what they are saying. I dont give a rats ass what anyone thinks about me. Im me, and I think im an awesome person, and thats all that matters to me. If someone is able to hurt your feelings, then you must believe that what their saying is true, and your just ashamed of yourself for being that way.
The only thing that hurts my feelings, is when I see or hear of someone else geting hurt in some way, but certainly not their feelings.
If someone suddenly was to tell me that they didnt love me anymore, that would not hurt my feeling either. As soon as someone doesn't want to be with me, I feel exactly the same way, so it's no big deal.
Name calling only destroys the credibility of the boaster, so go ahead and let me have it. lol
If a supposed friend rips me off, that doesn't hurt my feelings, that just make me realize what a wonderful person I am, and it make me feel superior, so thats a good thing in my mind.
I dunno... maybe us short, fat, balding, one legged dudes just don't have any feelings. laugh Bring on the insults ! I love em ! Oh, I forgot to mention the freedom to go off topic

wow.. as i hadnt seen this thread yet, im kinda glad it got "bumped". it is an interesting topic and i enjoyed reading MOST of the replies..

to me freedom is... a lot of things that have been already said, but it is the right to better yourself, your family, and your community.
it is the ablity to help yourself and others with your words, and actions. and it is the choice to make a choice to ether hurt someone, or to help someone, and the hope that you make the right choices.

using my "freedom of speech" im going to say that in a site like this, there are a lot of topics that get created in a day, and a good majority of them are topics that are mindless babble.. when a thought provoking topic is created, i rather like it when it is bumped to the top so that we can find it, and see that it is there.. for if it was created on a day that someone was gonek or if it was a topic that required some thought.. it is nice that an OP would care enough about the topic they created to tend to it and validate it.

as a side thought.. i notice that there are days when the only one to post in the music topic he created is romeo, yet noone is rude to him for it..
why would this be any different??

And I used my "freedom" to state my opinion. Believe me, Im not alone in what I said. I got tons of mail about it.

There is no need in "hanging" on to a thread, and I normally go through the threads to see which ones are good. I'm not that lazy.

Definitions of freedom on the Web:

* the condition of being free; the power to act or speak or think without externally imposed restraints

Freedom isn't something that can be described because it is different to every individual person. Everybody is free. They have the choice to do anything they want, it's whether or not they want to suffer the consequences of that choice. Every choice has an effect on something. Cause and effect.

Such as, the Army does not protect your freedom. It protects the consequences of your choices from being changed by some other foreign nation. It's kinda like accepting the lesser of two evils.
