Evolution is real and science points to the existence of God

As I made my coffee this morning I started thinking. Dangerous, I know, but anyway I got online and typed in evolution and religion, and clicked on an interesting dialog between a guy named Micheal Dowd and Wired News. It's brief and won't take but a few moments to read.

http://www.wired.com/science/planetearth/news/2007/12/dowd_qa

Of course my skeptical mind took over and I though, ya, when you can no longer explain God, just marry him to science and wahla, you get to stay around a bit longer in history..

Thinking seems to be dangerous for religion, but maybe not if one can marry science with religion? Think of the arguments it could settle, or at least for another few decades until even that raises even more questions. But let me not get ahead of myself.

As we evolve more young people are not afraid to ask hard questions about their religion, about life etc. How does one keep religion alive when thinking people begin to have even more questions than their parents, and demand answers that typically church leaders aren't happy about answering and for good reason.

After marrying the two, how does one explain a God that would create such chaos and call it creative. For a God that can do absolutely anything, wouldn't this god want better for his children than a fear based existence where nothing is ever concrete and struggle is a companion that never leaves you until death? And explain dinosaurs? Hello? Dinosaurs? Was that really necessary?
God wrote the first horror flick.

As a salesman, would you offer a heaven after the experience of earth? Well you damn well better or why the heck would anyone swallow the pill of earthly existence with out some bloody relief.

Just for the heck of it I am going to see if I can find this guys book and have a look.

Has anyone else entertained the idea of science/religion.

Personally I think the religious community is running out of ideas to gain new members, and young people are getting way too smart, they need something to get the focus back on god or their careers are toast. Ya, I know you think I am on hopeless heathen, and a hateful liberal, but for those who need more than rethoric......

Or we could do nothing and let things keep going until religion almost dies and only lives on in the elderly and the ignorant.

That's a much better idea. It's already a dying beast. It's on it's way out, it's just a matter of a few more generations.

As far as science and "religion" goes, there has never been a conflict between science and the religions of Eastern Mysticism and pantheism.

The only place where there is a conflict is with the religions that arose from the Mediterranean region (Judism, Christianity and Islam). They are all the same fragmented religion that continue to become more and more divise as time goes on.

Did you know that there are more different denominations of Christianity than there are religions in the world?

It's true. Christianity is the most fragmented religion of them all. Of course it's no wonder, the Protestants are the largest group of so-called "Christians" and they protested against their original church. They continue to protest against each other, and now they all think they are a bunch of individual popes.

If they were honest about it they would confess that there are as many demoninations of Christianity as their are Christians because no two of them will agree on all the details.

Of course they will argue that the details aren't important. But of course we all know that's hogwash. Any dogmatic religion that claims that details aren't important is already dead in the water.

And if the details are important than no two Christains even agree on the details. So it's a dead religion.

As far as I'm concerned to put the words, "Christianity" and "Science" in the same sentence is a joke.

Christianity is the most illogical dogma ever created by mankind. There is nothing even remotely sane about it much less scientifically logical.

A God who told people to throw stones at each other?

You mean there are people who are still naive enough to believe such a thing? noway

Tell me it isn't so.

When I was looking up all those stats on Paganism, I found a website that said that Christianity in the US (or people that claim to be practicing Christians) drops about a percentage point every year. That was what ONE website was claiming however. I’m sure if you went to another, it might say something all together different. That’s why I always take this "fair and balanced" statistical information with a grain of salt on the net. You need to look up like a dozen or more sites and do like a mean average.

 Never gonna happen:smile:

 Its part of the human experience. Humans will always have religion.

 The legal system is also a form of religion.

I’m just annoyed by that because inevitably some person will announce that the legal system is based on the 10 commandments. Those folks need to be slapped. That’s just naiveté that can’t be combated. It’s like those people that call Obama a terrorist.

I know it will never completely disappear and I can think of at least 1 reason why, fear. People don't like to think of existence without them in it so they convince themselves and others that if they follow their rules and other such nonsense that they will be able to go to heaven, paradise or what have you. Really think about it, simply not existing is pretty scary.

Somewhere along the line people started figuring out that they could "sell" hope to people in exchange for obedience and it seems to be working like a charm.

But these are just the opinions of an angsty teenager.

Considering that science and religion are not in conflict except in the minds of the religious who are "sure they are right". The two can stand on the same podium with no conflict at all. If there is a god he/she/it would have to be in harmony with nature so there would be no problems.

There really is no conflict between evolutionary biology and religion. It’s just the Evangelists that take everything so gosh darn literally that fuss about it. They also don’t like the idea that we branched off from chimp about 6 million years ago. That gives them the willies. happy

Boo - I just want to say how much I enjoyed your original post. No real comment, except I'm glad I read it. That can be humor in disagreement.

Well I don't know if bravery has too much to do with it, I haven't really had a choice. I'd leave if I could but there hasn't been a really reliable way for me to get outta here other than join the military or something and I'd rather not get shot in Iraq (plus they'd make me shave my head  ). Lucky for me the world is in a financial crisis so my chances of gettin outta here have gone from low to very slim. Meh I'll live.

Thanks Red... I am not sure how I feel about the marriage between science and religion, I suspect that it would solve some things and make other's worse, but haven't thought much about it just yet.

Humor, I do so love humor... Give me humor and sunshine and that's about all it takes to make me happy. Well ok a couple of other things but my favorite are those two things.
