Alright, so my family and I are really corny at times and actually have movie nights. We generally go for the horror films. They sometimes pick out the predictable slasher films or the i'm-a-ghost-i'm-going-to-haunt-you-because-i-was-wronged type movies. I'm bored of those, so I wanna pick out a really GOOD horror film, like one that'll make anybody jump.

Any ideas? :)

I recently saw Mirrors...thought it was pretty good. It's not about a ghost per se...

Strangers has nothing whatsoever to do with the supernatural...supposedly based on a true story it was.

Oh yeah..but you said no slashers...

Here's an obscure one, It's called "28 Days Later"

(I am Legend, with Will Smith, was sort of a take off of this movie: But 28 Days Later is better).

Can't go wrong with George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" (the Original).
I always like "Aliens" better (which was the 2nd part)

28 Weeks Later has some really nasty and disturbing **** that's not ghost or slasher related.

well to those of you wondering, my family's ages are like 18+ so there's no worries about how graphic the movies can be. i dunno, maybe something based on a true story?

The Descent is one of the only horror films I have seen that actually scared me.

28 Days later is a good choice. Cillian Murphy is nice to look at, Danny Boyle is a great director (Trainspotting, The Beach), the soundtrack is kind of great (most of his films have good tunes) and it has FAST ZOMBIES.

Also, someone mentioned Audition. Super creepy and good.

I also suggest Funny Games. There are two versions, which I guess are about identical and both directed by the same guy. One is American (more recent) and the other one is German. I saw the German version and thought it was great.

If you're more into cheesy than effed up things I suggest anything Troma related. Redneck Zombies, Class of Nuke 'Em High 2, Toxic Avenger, etc. Really laughable low budget super gore.

You could go with the Godfather of Gore, Hershel Gordon Lewis.
Bloodfeast or Bloodfeast 2 (that actually came out like 30 years after the first one)

MAY is a-ok.

High tension is good.

Braindead

Not really a "horror" movie, but I think you might enjoy the movie 'Fido".

Hope this helps.

Hellkitten is right on with Braindead. I forgot about that one.

I think it's called Dead Alive in the states. Peter Jackson directed pre-Lord of the Rings. I think it holds some record having to do with the largest amount of fake blood used in a scene.

Anything by Stephen King or James Patterson are good films

Okay, here's what you want.

Dead Alive,
I'm just gonna warn you that it is literally the Bloodiest movie EVER!
one scene alone used 300 litres of fake blood and over 30 dismembered body parts.
It's originally like 106 minutes long, but when it was released in the UK it was cut down to 60, and it was sold with a set of 4 airline sickness bags.

But it's a great movie, Peter Jackson directed it and is in it.

I saw Mirrors recently two. Other than the 2 graphic death scenes it wasn't totally disgusting. Ok story and decent thriller.

Event Horizon is pretty good. Haven't seen that in a long time. Kept me on edge.

The Unborn had me jump a few times, but unless you can get it on demand you'll have to see it in the theatre.
