Ok so an icon popped up today saying that my automatic updates is not running and gave me direction to turn it back on! When in properties I try to turn it back on and am getting this error message:
Error1058 The service can not be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it!

Can anyone tell me what this means and how to fix it??

I am no pro, but it sounds like you clicked on some sort of spam link...But I am not really the one to ask..

Do you have a decent anti virus/spyware program?

I would use caution, windows doesn't usually give you a message like that. Was an icon that popped up out of the tool tray?(over where the clock is) If it was a pop up window on your desktop more than likely it is from a virus, malware, or spyware. I would run a virus check first, then a spyware/malware check. If you find nothing then if you have run a backup on your system try restoring with the last known good configuration.
Good luck

Yep you have a virus/malware. Just google Error1058 and there are sites that shows you how to clean up the Vundo trojan.

Ok so if this is a virus why is my Norton not picking it up on a scan?? Also I googled it and it didnt say anything in my search about a virus!

Norton might not be detecting it. You could try using an online scanner. Once a virus gets installed in your pc then anti-virus softwares are pretty much useless since they get compromised.

Just a note of interest: There is NO anti-virus software that is 100% accurate. (Norton included)

Norton is not really an antivirus. Meaning they don't know much about viruses there in Norton headquarters. The software is for lamers, just to make them pay.

Now that you have seen it, stop being a lamer. Get NOD32 or TrendMicro, or at the very least AVG free edition (it will beat your Norton "antivirus" hands down).

I assume you're running XP(If it is Vista - go back to XP).
Disable security center. Disable windows firewall. Rid of Norton. Get free Comodo firewall. Get a router. Disable messenger service.

I would also highly recommend to stop the automatic updates, but you'd never believe this.

Vista's not that bad once you get used to it but whatever, since all you're getting is flamed, here's some real actual help for you:

just cut and paste these, I'm too lazy to code it in html lol

online scanners -

http://us.trendmicro.com/us/products/personal/free-tools-and-services/index.html?WT.mc_id=2008HP_Home_FreeTools_9292008

http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

http://usa.kaspersky.com/products_services/free-virus-scanner.php

A couple of good anti-virus sites/vendors -

www.bitdefender.com
www.kaspersky.com
www.trendmicro.com

mcafee,norton,symantec = bleh, they're always a step behind the sites/programs I mention above.

googling your error should give you some removal instructions, you can also run "msconfig" from your "start>run" command (just click run and type in msconfig) to see what's happening at startup, there's also your registry where you can go manually remove whatever is causing problems but I wouldn't recommend that since that's where everything else lives as well. There's spybot sd and ad-aware that are free anti-spyware programs that can sometimes clean viruses or detect them at least.

Feel free to message me if you need any more help, I do this type of thing all the time, for BOTH Windows and Macs.

OK so can anyone tell me what Anti virus 2009 is? Is it a virus or a scanner to protect from viruses?? Somehow it has been downloaded on my PC and I cant get it off!!

Is there a way to restore your PC without the recovery discs because I cant seem to find mine at this time!

I really need to get this resolved ASAP because I use my computer for work and school!!

So, you did not google it as advised above?

Ok. It is a "virus", a "malware" itself. A box of dynamite can have an appearance of a birthday cake, can't it?

You downloaded it by clicking on something that appeared to be "helpful".

"Do not trust, do not fear, do not beg."

These are usable not only in life, but in dealing with computers as well.

Well, you could have typed "Anti virus 2009" in google, and get this:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/uninstall-antivirus-2009

As for the rules: You've made a mistake because you weren't using them. Everybody does make mistakes. Not a big deal.

From now on, when you see "Your system is infected, click here to repair", you will know to use rule #1, "do not trust", and you'll be just fine.

There will be many more exploits designed to imitate Vista's super user-friendly interface (friendly, but powerless to really fix anything).

Instead of windows firewall, use one of your choosing. Instead of endless "security updates", just don't do stupid things (like fishing for a keygen without being virtual), use a router, stop useless services, do not ever delegate decision making to computer or web or Microsoft, use wireless only when absolutely warranted. Abstain from as many web services as possible.

You'll be alright. Good luck.

Before you try any advice in the thread, please back up your most important, irreplacable files onto another disk

Anti virus 2009 was just part of the problem. Oh and I did google it but since I made the mistake of thinking anti virus 2009 was going to help me I wasnt about to start downloading all the options google gave to fixing it.

For those who truly wanted to help me, I thank you. For those who enjoyed coming in here with your smartass comments I thank you as well. You were oh so much help!
