well, is sounds like she is saying that you can date other people until you get the ring. I think you have to decide to be exclusive long before getting to that stage. How can you have that kind of commitment to actually get to that stage if you are seeing more than one person?

I don't necessarily want a ring from the guy I choose to be with, does that mean that I will be single til the day I die even though we may live together for decades, share a bank account, and maybe even have kids together? I may be taking your mom's words a bit too literally, but I think that America puts too much emphasis on the physical aspects of a ring rather than the symbolic nature of this token.
