I use Avast. Free, and if you do an online research, you'll find it's on
top of the lists...
doesn't mess up your registery, and hog resources, either.

Norton came free with my first pc. Then, I found out after 3 months it
was no longer valid.

I think it sucks they load a pc with crap before you buy it. No like

I agree! Norton is nothing but a resource hog. Do an online search and
you'll find alot better and free.

I have NEVER payed for an ant-virus. I have always used AVG. I LOVE it.
It was free, and I downloaded it and ever since then I have never had to
worry about it. It quietly scans and updates for me everyday at the same
time. And if by chance a virus is trying to get into my computer it will
warn me and instantly get rid of it. I have grown to trust AVG, and
would not use anything else.

Agree AVG is great, I have AVG (my choice)and Norton (company
standard)on my work laptop and AVG pick's up stuff that norton never
finds. My IT department is now thinking od dumping Norton and going with
AVG.

This is just the information I need,

Does AVG have the firewalls you need too please anyone?
Can you use it alone like Norton?

I tried Avg myself..ran it for sometime with out worrying about
anything.
Someone mentioned Nod32 so i tried it...scan found 21 virii/trojans AVG
did not catch, so no more AVG for me.

AVG is awesome...my computer is much better off since i ditched norton.

i also find firefox, with stopscript to be a better browser than IE.

a word...it is not a good idea to run more than one anti-virus, such as
AVG and norton at the same time...

Norton will stop about anything if configured correctly but to me it's
like Microsoft...wants to take over everything...as for firewalls....get
a good router if you have highspeed internet.

ah...but AVG is free...

throw in a housecall every now and then (i run one once a week) and
you'll be doing quite fine.

i bet housecall finds BUNCHES that nod32 doesn't.

It's possible but so far has not....I also scan with housecalls now and
then...I'm not condemning AVG...lot of ppl swear by it...just didn't do
the job for me.

Thanks for the advice all,
so it's AGV and Firefox.

Steve you have slightly confused me,
you are the first person I have
seen have trouble with AGV.

I thought you were making housecalls on your computer,
didn't realise it was a program!

The 21 virii/trojans found was received via email so i'm assuming AVG
did not work with my email client...like i said most swear by it.

AVG is superb.

I was an out-and-out Norton user until I realised that Norton used so
much pc power.

Now I swear by AVG.

you should throw norton away and install avg free. It is free and gives you free definition updates and program updates. Avg is just as good as norton if not better. Give it a try. Here is the link for avg 32 bit

64 bit

Antivirus topic will never get old...
Norton is itself a virus, 10 years ago & still…
I used quite a few of them.
In my view Avira, Avast & AVG(now won by avast), Malwarebytes. Others good are Panda & Bitdefender. But these two are fully cloud based, need fast internet connection, otherwise no real time protection.
Now a day’s 360 total security(china made), Baidu. They are cloud based too.
Avira is strong, scan slow, sometimes detect normal files as virus. Little low on resources.
Avast is good, need custom install. It's install some unwanted boot ware. Low on resources.
AVG, now under Avast. I liked it before. Had some problems few years ago. Still full of ads.
Malwarebytes is very good for detecting malware then others. But no real time protection in free version.
