Okay, here's how it might happen.
In the attic there are boards, called stringers, that hold up the roof. They run from the spine or ridge down to the eaves. The ends of the boards are your eaves, outside the walls. If your roof is not out past the edge of your house, it is still the same thing. The stringers rest upon the top plate, which holds your walls together to each other. The top plate is resting directly on your wall tops, which is why it's called a top plate.
Now, if there's a leak in your roof, it can run down the stringers to the top plate, and then down inside of the walls. When the water gets to nails or other things that pierce the walls, the moisture can seep to the head of the nail.
That is how water can get into the walls. It can seep all of the way to the floor, like that, or it can seep out along the way, or do both.
Can you see up inside of your attic? With a light?
The moisture can run down any stringer, and when it reaches the top plate, then it can seep along the top plate all along a wall, so the leak may not look like it is anywhere near where the water is coming out.

If no gutters, then ice along the edge, where the roof meets the wall, can wick into the wall.

If you have gutters, and they are full of snow and stuff, then that can also let water run down between the gutters and the wall.
