i think it helps you to get to know people a wee bit better before
meeting. When I met my online friends in Canada I felt I already knew
them as we had been talking for a year on yahoo.

No, it does not. One has to be willing to take some measure of
calculated risk, though.

I drove 1500 miles to Arizona (and back), and, in appx. 7 years of being
on dating sites and talking to thousands of men, have actually met maybe
nine guys...have had only one date with all of them except for three.
One was the guy in AZ, another one I went out with four times and the
other one about two weeks.

All of these guys were "nice," for the most part, but there just wasn't
the right chemistry for a long-term relationship. And that's what I'm
looking for and i'm not willing to settle for less.

So...I'll happily remain single until such time I find him...or not.

Everyone lives so far away from each other that it's hard. But that's
anywhere. Actually I've had 2 dates arranged from JSH. They were both
very nice.

absolutely not... i am fully capable of meeting new people in my every
day life... i feel we are getting the best of two worlds... daily life
with our family, friends, and coworkers... then we have everyone from
here...(which seems to be part of my daily life as well, LMAO!!!)

LonelyWalker - I don't think online communication adversely effects
anyone with some solid life experience behind them, but I wonder about
young people. I'm not a psychologist or anything, but it seems possible
to me that if a teenager or young adult is socializing exclusively
online they might not 'learn' how to socialize well offline. (???)

Oh, wait, when you said "reduce our capability" did you mean
'interpersonal skills' or 'time available for offline meeting' ?

This is a great place too meet people and get to know them, to decide if
you will meet them in life, I think it's wonderful

Conversations are conversations. They flow with their own rhythm and
they feel no different whether in person or online to me.

In some ways I love the online interaction because the physical realm is
removed and I am free to discover who a person is on a deeper level
before a real life encounter. The meeting then is just a continuation
of the dialogue...and then the intangibles of chemistry can be sorted
out.

Sometimes meetings IRL are overshadowed by strong chemistry and you are
blinded temporarily to the 'who' of them...which may not be so great...

For some, online interraction becomes an addiction and they cease to
live in the real world. In those cases, it is not healthy and does
impede a person's social abilities.
