Portland students want to rename school after Obama 07:53 AM PST on Thursday, November 13, 2008 By KGW Staff PORTLAND -- Students are trying to get a Portland school renamed after President-elect Barack Obama. Portland Public Schools was already in the process of renaming the school currently known as “Clark K-8 at Binnsmead School” and a naming committee is working on a list of suggestions that the public will eventually vote on. But after the November election, some of the students got the idea to throw Obama’s name into the ring. Do you think it would be appropriate to name a Portland school after President-elect Barack Obama? A couple of people have e-mailed the school, suggesting it be named after the new American leader and Willamette Week was even reporting that students at the school were heard chanting Obama’s name one day, and filling out forms to get his name of the voting list. No word on exactly when the official vote will happen or what other names are up for consideration. The school is located at 2225 SE 87th Avenue, in Portland. YES,YES,YES, About 3 weeks after he's sworn in. Now find out about naming a school after someone that is still alive. THE PERSON HAS TO BE DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I take it your mad about the stamp too.. What stamp? it was an attempt at humor.Lynann my sarcastic hero got it..lol

I don't even know what to say about this...... My patients have taken to calling everyone Obama at work. They just add it on to your first or last name, whatever sounds catchier. I'm HeatherBama right now.... It actually is quite funny when they pair it with the right name. I'm Jackiebama and I'm the Bama!! jackie o the bama lol

Jesus it's a school.Though i think its a wee bit premature,it is their business and the towns what they name their school.I personally like the Mr Magoo moniker.He couldn't see the differences in people.

They named an airport after Reagan and after what he did to the air traffic controllers that was not appropriate. If the people in the neighborhood and the students want to name the school after obama or Mister Magoo it's their business and no one elses. Lynann, What Reagan did to the controllers? They were Federal employees and were in violation of their contract. " As federal employees the controllers were violating the no-strike clause of their employment contracts. In 1955 Congress had made such strikes a crime punishable by a fine or one year of incarceration -- a law upheld by the Supreme Court in 1971. Nevertheless, 22 unauthorized strikes had occurred in recent years -- by postal workers, Government Printing Office and Library of Congress employees, and by air traffic controllers who staged "sick-outs" in 1969 and 1970." The public supported the Govt. on this and I have an uncle who refused to strike--still very proud of him for that. Reagan told them to get back to work, to obey the contract they signed and they didn't. Then he fired them. I know this is off-topic but you sort of opened the door. -Drew

We have "Adopt the Highway" signs. The group that has the sign has to keep that part of the highway clean. The KKK applied for a sign in a white neighborhood and you know there was a big stink about it. They got their sign. Btw, the signs cost money. Well, somebody took the sign down. The city had to put up another. It happened many times. The city was saying that it cost too much money to keep replacing the sign. Eventually the sign never reappeared again.

You know it's good to see someone mention our buddy Stalin. Ever bit as big monster as Hitler was. Why more isn't said about it amazes me to this day. Sorry, I don't buy your comparison on Hitler and Obama. You might not like Obama but their actions as leaders are not in the same league. Get some perspective please? I wonder what they will name after Shrub who started a war based on a lie that has killed over 4k US troops and countless civilians? Hell, there are lots of people who have issues with Jackson being on the $20 bill. No matter the issue or personality there is some group somewhere that will be offended. Personally I am offended by American Idol but...
