Portland students want to rename school after Obama

PORTLAND -- Students are trying to get a Portland school renamed after President-elect Barack Obama.

Portland Public Schools was already in the process of renaming the school currently known as “Clark K-8 at Binnsmead School” and a naming committee is working on a list of suggestions that the public will eventually vote on.


But after the November election, some of the students got the idea to throw Obama’s name into the ring.



Do you think it would be appropriate to name a Portland school after President-elect Barack Obama?














A couple of people have e-mailed the school, suggesting it be named after the new American leader and Willamette Week was even reporting that students at the school were heard chanting Obama’s name one day, and filling out forms to get his name of the voting list.


No word on exactly when the official vote will happen or what other names are up for consideration.


The school is located at 2225 SE 87th Avenue, in Portland.

Many public high schools in my area are named after dead presidents.

I think its fine to name the school after him but it's a little early yet.

Why would it be innapropriate?

I mean, come on folks, he is a black man who has risen through all kinds of turmoil, to become the first black president of the united states.

Even if he does a bad job (which I personally doubt), he is still a good example to students and children of what can happen if you aspire and work hard at something.

that school needs help. Glad i dont live nowhere near there. Why not name it after hitler. Be just as bad.

Schools are usually named after dead folks as a sort of memorial.It's a wee bit early to name a school after him but maybe they can name a lunch item after him Like Obama tater tots.

I can't even believe that people are taking a man that had over 10 million people killed and comparing him to Obama.

They named an airport after Regan and after what he did to the air traffic controllers that was not appropriate.

If the people in the neighborhood and the students want to name the school after obama or Mister Magoo it's their business and no one elses.

I don't even know what to say about this......

My patients have taken to calling everyone Obama at work. They just add it on to your first or last name, whatever sounds catchier. I'm HeatherBama right now.... It actually is quite funny when they pair it with the right name.
