In this day and age...marriage is an atiquated institution that has no sociological merit whatsoever. The only value that marriage has is the financial boom it provides to the legal community when it sucks the last morsel of life out of an already dying relationship---DIVORCE.

Ho, that's harsh! I think marriage can be a very good thing.

It can be, but you get people who think you can just sign a piece of paper and live happily ever after. But it turns out it doesn't work that way. Marriage is a constant thing that always needs work. Comes down to the old saying "Nothing worth having comes easy".

Very true.

There are 4 of us in my family. My youngest sister married when she was 16. She lost her husband of 32 years this year to cancer. The other 3 of us were much older when we married and all divorced, some more then once. Age does have something to do with it most of the time, because we constantly change. At 40 you aren't the same person you were at 20. Whether it works or not, I think depends on how the two grow together or apart.

I don't have a problem with marriage. It's just one of those things that should be seriously considered and not rushed into.
I think that's what happens people rush in and then it doesn't work.

i guess i'm the oddity then huh?

i dated for about five years before we married

we were good, close friends for at least another previous five years

and i got married old (29 years of age)

it didn't work

personally, i don't think it has anything to do with age, how long you've known someone, and/or whether you lived together first.

i think it boils down a lot of other issues, a couple of important ones being: the willingness of the partners to compromise and whether there is mutual respect and consistent appreciation of one another.

Divorce easier and more accepted these days. People will jump into something they're not ready for because it's simple to get out of.

It might cost you some money, but if you both are just going to give up, yeah. Simple.

I'm not criticizing anything. Be who you want to be. I'm just commenting on what you've stated here.

In Minnesota if you file for joint divorce (or whatever the hell it's called, where both parties just admit it's over and there's no property or custody battles) you have to pay $330 for a filing fee, then it's over. But if one person decides to go all out with laywers and properties and such.........wow...I don't even want to know. Thank god I don't have to deal with option "B"
