So I get a call from my daughter today... The school had her call me to tell me she needed lunch money. I told her I would bring a check tomorrow to pay for today and the rest of the week. So I hear the lady in the background say "she needs a check here by 9:30 or you can't have lunch today."noway WTF??? So I tell my daughter, don't worry baby, Mommy will handle this. Go back to class."
I had to leave work and I arrive in the office where the secretary informs me there is a "ZERO Tolerece Policy for Offenders" basically those that haven't paid up on their lunch bills... WTF?? Needless to say I let them know EXACTLY what I think of their policy. And that they will never again pull my daughter out of class and make her call me to get lunch money. If I was behind, THEY need to call me and get it fixed. Not my daughter. mad

I can't believe they would demean your daughter like that!!! Yes, the call should have been made to you and in plenty of time. I'm set up on an online reminder system when her balance gets to $10. That's ridiculous of that school system. Gosh, even when I used to mess up once in a while when mine were in grade school, the kids would get a PB&J. Heck, the underprivileged kids get free and discounted meals from our taxes, so surely you'd think your daughter's school could make a call and let her have a PB&J for a day!!!

I talked to the lunch administrator... he said they are supposed to get PB&J and send a note home that she needs money. I never received a note. She's a kid, she forgets things. Hell I forget things too... But come on. Bring her out of class and tell her she won't get fed today if I'm not there by 9:30?? Bunch of crap

Well I feel that they went the wrong way about it but.......just in case I would put some money in her back pack just in case it happens again that way she could get lunch and you could send the check the next day. And let her know not to spend it for anything else that it is to be used only if she has to buy her lunch. Could save a lot of heart ache.

But to be honest if the school did waiver it and let it go just think how many parents would try that and not pay it back. Rules are rules but they should have went about it a different way and just called you and not upset your daughter.

First I have to say that school system is going over board doing that to your daughter. One day, come on. 2 bucks, then send a letter, call, email what ever to let you know you owe money. I personally believe that every child should have food. If I was an administrator I would have dug in my pocket to give a kid a meal. Having said that........

Now for the other side, the budgets are very tight in a lot of school systems and there are a lot of parents that abuse the free pb&j for forgetfull students. And remember, you cant do for one child without doing for 50 others. So to a point I can see the zero tollerence. But like in life there has to be a balance.

Sorry that happened to your daughter.

I know they need paid for their lunches... Which by the way are double the cost of any other school I have seen... but we won't even go there. I have will pay for her lunch. I have no problem with that. But THEY should have called me, not made her the messenger and tell her she won't get fed unless I show up by 9:30. And come on... a ZERO Tolerence Policy?? It's friggin grade school.

I understand that the school has to charge for lunch but to do that to a child is absurd...where my son goes to school if he forgets hi lunch money they have an envelope in which they give the student the money on a I>O>U basis and send a note home...

Bingo! And I agree with you 100%. With all the taxes we pay for schooling, nobody can tell me they don't have enough petty cash set aside for these types of instances. On top of that, it's pretty obvious if there are certain persons who continuously abuse the system, so those are the one they should be looking out for and put the kabosh to them if necessary.

Whoever came up with the term "zero tolerance" should've called it "zero common sense" instead.

Wow, that's harsh.

I've let funds run out of the lunch money account before. I forget to look it up online.

They let it go for a few days and emailed me that I owed them money.

I can't believe that they told your child that they couldn't have lunch.explode

Some schools don't even have enough money to pay for textbooks for all of the students.

not only should you have been called (by them directly, not your child) but they should have been on top of it weeks, or at least days, before you were at a 0 balance.

our school freezes pizza slices for kids who've paid and missed school that day. those slices are then defrosted for any kid that 'forgot' to come to school with lunch.

after i spoke to the principal about it, i'd have gotten immediately on the telephone with my local school trustee and given them an earful as well.
