WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's grandmother died of cancer, he said in a statement on Monday, a little more than a week after Obama interrupted the White House race to say goodbye to her in Hawaii.

"It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer," Obama said in a joint statement with his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng. "She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility."

Dunham helped raise Obama from the age of 10 while his mother was working in Indonesia, and Obama took an emotional 22-hour trip to Hawaii to visit her on October 23 and 24.

That's so sad. If he becomes president, she won't see it happen. It will be so bittersweet for him. flowerforyou

Think she will see it from a Higher Plane of Existence.

Was glad to see that even in the bitterness of the campaign McCain and his wife sent their condolences.

Grief is an experience we all share.

So...what is the point? A man's grandma died. Mine did too. Probably many people on this site have lost a grandparent....it is called natural progression. Does this have anything to do with the election?

You ain't gaining any points with me....My mom walked out when I was six months old...(She did call once when I was 28)

No, I am not kidding.

A man whose grandma I never knew died...so what.

I am even voting for the guy but that weak assed pity play score Zero on my card.

Are you implying her death was timed to help him in some way?

How sad that she could not hang on a few more days, but she must have died a happy & proud lady.

I don't think he/she was implying that at all...

but, if anyone REALLY cared...send flowers!

It makes/made no bearing on MY presidential vote whatsoever.

I voted last week...so, her kicking the bucket made no bearing on my vote anyway.

RIP...Obama's Grandma. flowerforyou

I am sorry to hear that she died. I think it was nice what he said about his grandmother and that she meant more to him than the race.

It is sad that she won't be here for the election announcements. I can only imagine how I would feel if I was in his place. It would be most difficult to concentrate on the election with her passing on his mind.
