you know what else takes away from the american dream?
corpses in hospital waiting rooms... people who cant afford a decent education who have to remain stagnant and have no hope of social mobility... people who turn to crime because they feel that they're government does not care about them... people who work hard trying to make ends meet only to be told that because they're not rich they are not part of the american dream and are lazy.

Me too but if that gets him thru a night sleeping in the street then so be it.At least I know I attempted to do something nice.Anyway not all homeless people are drunks and addicts.Lots of families out there.

Yes, there are becoming more and more homeless families. Even the food pantries are becoming bare.

This is where we should be looking at the cause for this, and address this cause...

okay..i have no pity for somebody that turns to crime to even feed their family.
and who said because you were poor you were lazy?
drug dealers and burglars.......I would call them PUNKS that bypass the whole system and it will catch up with them Im sure..somehow.

but then i dont expect my government to care for me either. nor a cop nor do a trust some healthcare person to diagnose my uninsured azzzzzzz. these are my problems.

i also have no patience for people who turn to crime for any reason, but its a sociological reality

very correct and crime rate and drug sales are a horrible problem right now. I have zero tolerance for drug dealers. they are part of the problem.

and they are making nice TAXFREE money right know while killing and destroying our children

laugh Does any waiter make more than a quarter million a year?laugh

Take from one, give to another... Societies have fallen from concepts as these...

We've done it before - Clinton.

WOW....Don't get me started on Clinton...

The concept of Wealth redistribution sounds a bit socialistic to me. I believe if someone earned it, they have more of a right to it than you or I.

I'm going to school in hope to one day become a medical doctor... That's 4 years of college (biologies, biochem, calculus, etc.) then one year of interviewing and applications to colleges around the country, 4 years of medical school, followed by another 4 years of residency. THEN i can apply for a job to pay back $250,000 dollars in student loans. Starting salary for a radiologist on average in the country is $300,000 to $400,000. Why does some guy who works part time at the supermarket have more of a right to some of that money than me?

You take away incentive to strive for things like that when we try to even out wages.

If we NEEDED income tax at all... flat tax is the only fair tax IMO.

I still think it's foolish to start preaching about wealth redistribution when we should be thinking about how to make our money go further...

I don't think anyone here is saying that everyone should make the same wages regardless of their job or education. You can have different pay rates for different jobs and still pay everybody a living wage, or at least have government support for those who do not make a living wage.

It's called unforseen circumstances. You can save money all you want but one good illness, accident, loss of job etc can wipe it out quickly.

I didn't know you were going to be a doctor. Cool.

My father and I have talked to our doctors about the election. This may surprise you. They are voting for Obama.

I don't know if flat tax will fix things. What if there is not enough money to pay needed services? That would create a need for increased sales tax, right? But...like I said, I don't know a lot about it.

im just certain there are lots of programs out there right now to help the poor and help people get an education.

many dont use or take advantages of these programs.

and really..you cant hold a gun to these peoples heads to get them offa the streets.
they are there for one reason or another. and maybe its not their fault.......BUT again...their are many resources currently available

A good place to start is to help people get a good education without the high interest student loans. While they are in college, they agree to do community service in their community or Habitat for Humanity to work it off.If we can give criminals free college educations on our dime then lets educate poor people ,give then hope and the skills to make a decent wage before they get to jail or get mired in hopelessness.

There are programs, but they're often inadequate, or they only address a symptom and not the root of the problem. Education is probably the best example...I've gone to a school where most people were middle or upper class, and a school where most people were poor. The difference in the quality of the teachers, the facilities, the materials, the programs, the difference in the police presence on campus, and so on, are remarkable. Yeah, you can get out of it, but in order to rise from the bottom to the middle you have to be exceptional, whereas if you're born into the middle you only have to be ordinary to stay there.

Most people are ordinary.

I agree. A living wage for all jobs is also important. Even if we manage to get a lot of people educated and into high level jobs, that doesn't erase the need for the lower level jobs and people to fill them. People who end up filling those jobs should have the opportunity to rise above if they wish and are willing to put in the work, but they shouldn't be punished with poverty wages for providing services that we need or want.

i put myself through college on student loans. these are the lowest intrest rate available for a loan. I also was a single parent.so i got Pell grants that paid my tuition and books.

the system WORKS.
many people dont use it.

give criminals, felons, a good education. this is great and I do know that they at least can obtain their GED in prison...at the least.
but yanno..fact is they get out...most of em are gonna hit the streets again and make money the easy way.
