The Golden Rule

They say to be the change you wish to see in the world,
but what do they really mean?
I want to see the world be a kinder place,
a place where people appreciate their lives,
and those of others.
I want to see a world where people know when enough is enough,
when to speak, when to communicate without words.
I want to see a world of ideals, of dreams!
Of romance and high-adventure!

...but that world is bigger than me, bigger than anyone.
I cannot be an ideal, try as I might to live up to them.
I cannot show others the beauty of life on my own.
This world is not the kind place I wish it were,
and so I escape from it.
Not into some substance, not into a game or a book,
but into action.

I escape by doing exactly what they say,
futile though it may be.
I act out the change I wish to see, the actions I wish others would take.
If I am lonely, I find someone who seeks comfort and am there for them.
If I am sad, I cheer someone else up.
When I hope someone will remember my birthday, I plan a surprise for someone else's.
I take my inner desires and I enact them towards others;
I fulfill my own dreams for those around me.

I am the change I want to see in the world,
but unlike what the phrase implies I do not think I will change the world in being such.
Instead, I escape, through kind actions, caring words.
I escape into a beautiful world which I alone live in.
I show others a glimpse of my beautiful world,
by living vicariously, through myself.
