Good Point Lex.

All right folks!

For the guys, - What peeks your interest, (in addition to pics)? What would inspire YOU to respond to a female?

And

For the ladies - What do you want to see? What "floats your boat"?

A deal breaker for me is horrific spelling and lack of capitalization. (Strict grammar school education!)

Feedback?

Here's the entirety of a profile I read this morning:

"I like to have fun."

OK, that works for me! I feel like I've known you all my life, and there's no doubt in my mind that you're THE ONE and now all I have to do is find an electron microscope and do my damnedest to find out if there's anything other than those 5 little words rattling around loose in that great big empty cranium of yours.

There was one I saw last year that was marginally worse, i.e.,

"I'm a fun person who likes to have fun." Which is good to know, because there are few things worse than meeting a fun person who DOESN'T like to have fun. Some of us have issues with mixed messages, or maybe we don't.

how about the profiles who are self-admitted b!tches and are cranky, crotchety, and cantankerous?

~~~~
that's part of the reason why i don't (or didn't) bother reading profiles to get an idea of whether someone would catch my interest. there's only one profile that ever did that, and even without his ever having a photo posted, i wrote, and often read his updates - they were fun, witty, silly, and abnormal (abnormal being the key word - give me a guy who stands out in a crowd).
they all say basically the same thing, obvious wants that we all want out of life, in a partner. heck, they may have even cut and pasted directly from any other profile and i wouldn't even have noticed.
Absolutely. I'm a writer; why would I want to be with somebody who can't even use an apostrophe correctly?
There has to be some content in the profile. Telling me you like to have fun is meaningless unless I know what "fun" means to you -- hang gliding? Drinking in an alley until you pass out and goats steal your purse? Throwing rocks at police cars? These are the things I need to know.
We are operating in a medium of words here, words and maybe some pictures (not everybody posts pictures). So, if you want me to notice you, you better do something with those words. I have already seen seventy-two quadrillion and twenty-two profiles that say "I don't know what to write here" and "Anything you want to know, you'll have to ask," and "I'm laid back and easy-going."
If yours is the seventy-two quadrillion and twenty-third, what is there that I'm going to notice that's any different?
Words, people. It's all about the words. If you can't come up with anything interesting about yourself, then I have to assume either that:
a.) there really isn't anything interesting about you, or
b.) you don't have the ability to string words together to demonstrate that there is anything interesting about you.
Either way, I'm not interested.
from the other side, the people that write and say 'so tell me about yourself' get a quick 'delete'
i figure if you're the one interested in me, and are writing to me, you'd better do your best to keep me entertained and attracted, certainly not the other way around.
(sometimes i'm nice enough to tell them this)
Hey Lex,
I have to comment, your numerical references are amazing.
Would numerology be an interest of yours?
Just an observation...
Other than that, I agree totally with the "bait" that will bring interest. I need to take a look at my profile, as I put it up before I was really "on the site", so I have a better grasp of the mechanics of the site, and the interactions of the members.
Hmmm, I think I have a project today.
Not really consciously. I have a tendency to choose numbers for different purposes, like I have arbitrarily decided that no one closer than 897,000 miles on this site can be interested in me. I don't know why I chose that number, other than that it's significantly farther away than the moon (248,000 miles) which seems about right.
When I first started posting here, I would occasionally mention that I had been on many other dating sites in the past. I started out claiming it had been about 9000, and have gradually increased the number (sometimes actually during a single thread), and now it's close to 13,000. None of these numbers are accurate, but the conceptual continuity amuses me for some reason.
All of my profiles are different, too -- although they all cover a lot of the same ground, the methodology varies based on my perception of the site, what kinds of people are there, etc. I would disdain a "generic" profile simply by virtue of its genericness -- that, and the fact that I originally wrote them all at very different times....
Well I had to perv my own profile, just to see what I wrote. Yes I listed the activities I like to do, and would enjoy doing with a friend.
That being said, tonight I am going to a performance of West African drumming and dancing.
Tomorrow afternoon I will be attending a drum workshop put on by the drummers in the group.
Like Water Drum and Dance Ensemble.
Thats my idea of fun.
And how was the workshop?
There is an informal drum circle in downtown Asheville every weekend.
Lex, I said it before and I will continue to say it. You are the best. I cant wait to read what you write because it adds to my humor for the day. You are so spot on with your narratives that it makes one say, "Damn why didn't I post that first?"
My profile is just stupid, but then i guess that is kinda true to how i am a lot of the time. I have never put a great deal in a profile online, i have always been on dating sites mainly for the forums rather than dating itself, and have only really communicated with forum people. So they get to learn about me from my posts. I only want basic info from a profile, age, sex, location, and a few pics too.
One of the best profiles I have ever read was on another site, and it was by a man who was blind.
He stated that for the first date "he would let the woman decide as women tended to be smarter than men anyways, and besides she would have to drive as the police didn't let him anymore for some reason."
Then there was a question about what past relationships taught him. His response was to "make sure all sharp objects are nailed down and to duck low."
He had several other witty comments, but I thought the profile showed his humor and intelligence too and was a good mix. He sounded interesting.
And, just today I saw one that started out "I am not writing any more women on this site, I wrote one to tell her about myself and she complained that the response was too long."
Geez, guy, get over it and move on. You have to write to people to say hello to get to know them.
I have seen several that say "blah, blah, blah"
and that is about it. I am sure they draw a big audience, NOT!! Another catchy one is "..............." so what does that mean?? I didn't open it up to find out.
Personally, I like someone who can be intelligent and have a humorous side.
The 58 y/o who only dates 18 to 25 y/o girls was a big passover for me to, actually want to tell him what I thought of him, but not my business.
Thank you!
One of the things I like about this site is that I can write all sorts of stuff; it can be nonsense, or reality, or whatever, and people give me good feedback.
Makes me a better writer.
And I've run into those topics too, where I think, "Why didn't I post that first?" These things happen!
