Thinking we are going to rehabilitate some inmates is just ridiculous. They come from second and third generation "inmate" families, are illiterate, addicted, mentally and often physically ill, have few or no job skills or experience, and are so violent that they have virtually no ability to live in mainstream society. They are so institutionalized that they will purposely re-offend to return to prison.

Serial criminals reoffend, it is in their nature to do so otherwise we wouldn't call them serial killers, rapists, whatever. Rehabilitation is silly, I'm sorry, but it is. Same goes for drug rehab and alcholic anonymous...if you want to change you can change with little to no help at all. What kind of society needs to be reminded daily that something is bad?  Why do they reoffend(if they really do)? Are the committing the same infraction or a different infraction? What are the conditions? Im not even convinced that the majority do reoffend. And those titles are put on people by those with a financial vested interest in imprisoning people. Sociological the reason they reoffend is because it is what they are good at, serial killers kill because they 'think' they can get away with it...they become good at it and decide they were meant to do it. A lot of it is psychological, in their head they are making the call...life or death, a power stroke. Serial offenders believe they have the control, they drag along police (Zodiac, BTK, Bundy, etc.) for a show and they get attention from it...indeed serial is a title given by an outside source (usually law enforcement will give the title for repeat crimes of the same nature) and the media doesn't help but fuel it...but to say that someone can be rehabbed out of doing it again is silly, again what kind of society needs to be reminded on a daily basis not to kill, rape, or torment others? Obviously they werent very good at it if they got put in prison. And serial killers should be locked up (after a fair trial of course). None of this has anything to do with 99.9999% of everyone else. Honestly, you cannot rehab a criminal...what kind of society is that? "Sorry, I didn't mean to kill her/him/it, I need rehab."? It defies the judicial system, there are few times one can get some kind of program for 'rehab'...to me about the only one is a true psychological illness. The point is we can't have every murderer going up to a judge and saying "I just need to be rehabbed" it would make the justice system worthless (moreso then it is currenty in my opinion). That and rehab to me is a comical idea, to think that someone needs support to stop doing something that is killing them or others is silly...again this goes back to society. And on topic, there are currently two unsolved serial murder cases; Zodiac and Jack the ripper. I agree this doesn't have anything to do with the other prison population, but if you look above at your reply you asked why serial offenders repeat their offenses...and I answered that. |

I am glad that eventually the man taught a good lesson but, it was after commiting truly heinous offenses against a miriad of people and thereby affecting the people far beyond his victims. He earned his death.

I still stand by my stance, you cannot rehab someone...either they change or they don't, but no outside party can assist in that. It is a choice all their own.
