Topic: Intelligence, what does it mean to you?

Ive noticed lately that there has been a few references in threads related to intelligence.

This is a subject i have covered before on another site, but i thought it would be nice to hear new opinions.

To me, intelligence means u have knowledge of certain subjects, whether that be academic, or practical.

Often, i get the impression some ppl think that to be intelligent, u must have a good education and a degree. I dont think like that, i think that a person can have a lot of knowledge about life/relationships/people and can acquire it thru experiences in life, and not neccessarily thru academic inclination.

Then that leads me to think....which 1 is more valuable when it comes to having a good quality of life? Academic knowledge, or experience gained knowledge?

I think that both academic related and life related intelligence are just as important. Just because I went through five years of college doesn't make me any more intelligent than someone who merely graduated high school. I don't place one standard of education above another.

Academic knowledge is okay, as long as it pertains to something in your life. If you went to college and learned useless information, things you will never use because discussing 18th century literature with the crowd at your factory job, what good is it?

So I tend to think more along the lines of experience gained knowledge. It might be more useful and helpful in your day-to-day life and a more common factor in others lives.

Thats kinda how i feel....but then again, some ppl go thru life with fair ease, while others experience much in a short time....does this mean 1 will be more intelligent than the other?

I am honestly looking for diverse thought, i enjoy it :)

When asked what I'm looking for in a man, I say smart, funny, empathetic, the ability to effectively apply information...

Smart can hinder you. You can overanalyze, not relate, not apply well but remember everything...

IQ is 80%. The other 20% is common sense and application of that ability to process information. JMO. A degree can potentially mean smart, but I've met some real idiots with masters and graduate degrees... and brilliant non college folk.

Smarts is the way to my heart, it is foreplay to me. Knowledge and a passion of sharing that knowledge.... gosh it gets me everytime. A tall, smart man with great lips... Just ask Lexy, he shakes my knees together at times.

I think education can play a huge role as far as intelligence goes, but theres no substitute for life experience. You can learn it but until you experience it you really dont know it..

Its nice to know u feel like that, cos i feel i am not academically inclined, but i feel i have a good understanding of life and ppl.

I dont have much qualifications, my mum n dad split up when i was at high school, and i just lost the motivation to want better for myself. I returned to education as an adult, refreshing my core skills and i have worked in a college for the last 3yrs. I dont have any degrees, and i often feel inferior to ppl who have gained qualifications, but i dont want to feel like that cos i feel i offer summit valuable to our world too! im just not academically intelligent!

I tend to agree with u there...qualifications help with things like getting a job, being financially secure (which i know is important)fulfilling career ambitions etc...while experience gained knowledge tends to help at times of personal emotional situations, relationships with others, personal choices, and practical issues.

Being a teacher I place a huge value on education. However, learned knowledge has made me who I am today. I have an uncle who went to college for every degree you can think of but to sit and have a common sense conversation is out of the question. When dating, once the physical aspect is over, men find being intelligent a turn on. My husband always said he needed a dictionary when we disagreed. Funny man, he was!! He always said I was taken aback by how attractive you are but to hear you speak and to watch you interact with other people speaks volumes above being pretty. He was the sweetest.

I agree, you can have all the education the world has to offer, but if you have no experience, no common sense then applying what you've learned in day to day life can be diffult. Ignorance isn't just about whether you're educated or not, it's just as much about whether you've experienced something or not.

I can say to someone who's lost a leg.."I know how you feel, because I read about it in a book." but until I've actually lost my leg, I can't possibly know.

Sorry might be slightly off topic but if you want to define intelligence you have it.
Pink from what I have read of your posts I am of the opinion you should not feel inferior to anyone. You strike me as a good person. Actually you express yourself pretty well. Not only making clear statements but supporting them. Is your spelling and Capitalization relaxed? Sure; so what; that is what Spell Check is for and this is a forum not advanced English Composition. You hang in there and you will do fine in the long run.

Ha!! And that means you are pure brillance, Cassanova. Knowledge and skill of pleasuring the carnal woman is like a masters and a graduate degree and vocational training and a apprenticeship and the school of hard knocks all rolled up into one. Who needs more than that? I'll take two....

Farks!!! You were supposed to say but there is only one of me.... (as I said I'll take two).

And I would say, oh that's right, no cloning as you republicans don't believe in stem cell research...

I got it all planned out. Well, had it.

Pink, I gotta admit I'm not feeling all that smart in this. I thought I knew Goof better... but at least he sees I'm smart and purdy.... yee haw!
