I recently recived an e mail from an old friend regarding "Holiday Blues".
"The holidays are coming up, make them go away."

Most of us here in the forums are single. The Holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, & New Years are hard to face alone. Some don't have family nearby. Asking myself and others during this busy time to think of those that might not have a place to go. If we can include just one in our plans for those special times, it will really make a difference.

Seriously, I've had a friend who assumed that if I didn't have anything to do I'd just show up.

One year, at Christmas, I drug a friend down to a homeless shelter to help pass out presents. I will never forget the smell of all those stale bodies together. He hasn't forgiven me, but it was an eye opening experience. Because we have the climate we do, we have a fairly large homeless population. We think that California ships them over to us. Sad situation. On our school emergency cards, there are boxes for parent(s) to check, homeless, not homeless.

Yes, holidays w/o family are long & lonely.
Even if you go to friends; the memories still haunt your heart. Have heard where some people go do jobs for others, so they can be home with their families.

I have to work that day AND Black Friday. The family that I have here will be going out of town all 4 days so I will be by myself. This will be a first for me cause we always spend time together during the holidays. That's going to be one long and lonely weekend.

I can identify with the whole holiday thing. I find it helps to plan some thing to do rather than be alone. So many places to volunteer and some of the hotels actually put on fabulous buffets if you want to take a mini vacation. Church often has a lot of activities. I usually serve and ongoing sandwich and beverage bar for the choirs that sing all day Christmas Eve/Christmas. I was relieved when my girlfriend and her husband ask me and my Dad to go together cooking the Thanksgiving dinner. Keeps us both from eating left overs for days.
