No.. they lose that right when they make a stupid choice of committing a felon. People should think of the consequences before they do such things...

No. Here's why.

"I vow that all prisons will have king sized beds, five course meals, wide screen tvs in every cell and they will be able to have conjugal visits seven days a week".

Every felon would vote for that guy. With the number of felons in the US, that would be a landslide victory for the candidate.

also the voting requirements are a state level thing. Some states allow it and others don't

for as long as I can remember (not counting the 80's) a felony conviction in Texas loses the right to ever vote again

I think Florida was trying to change a similar law a while back but I don't know how it turned out

The thing is that the constitution doesnt guarantee a vote. It leaves that to the states to determine. It DOES guarantee a freedom from prejudice in voting based on race or gender

Yes they should be allowed, after all they've paid their debt to society, right?

it all depends on the crime and severity of said crime....not all felons are bad ppl

That's true. Some crimes were committed when a person was addicted to drugs.

Many states have appeals processes where former felons who have served their sentences and are living productive lives can have their voting rights restored.

I have mixed feelings on this issue.

There are people who make youthful mistakes and go one to be productive, tax paying members of their community. I think there's a huge difference between career felons and those that make mistakes early in life.

It's my bet that losing their right to vote doesn't pop up in the mind of a kid who goes joy riding or in the mind of a bank executive who embezzles....the list goes on. Should they all be treated the same? A felony is a felony so you should be forever barred from voting?

I think they should be able to vote again after they pay their debts to society.

No! Prison is a place where scary men repeatedly rape you and pass you around for cigarettes and if you’re lucky the only thing that gets shanked is your colon.

In four states, including New York, felons on parole cannot vote, but felons on probation can. In some states, felons must formally apply for restoration of your voting privilege
