why in the marriage vows people say till death do us part. I believe in the words but clearly most people don't anymore. What do you think?

I think the vows are as disposable as everything else in our society.

I believe that's what marriage is...prolly why I have never gone there before.

thats why most people come up with their own word's !

Because its tradition. I guess they just want to believe it. But when the first sign of major trouble comes along...they run and get a divorce.

people change and situations change.
i don't think anyone who is that unhappy, for whatever reasons, should be forced to stay together until death, regardless of what words are uttered at that particular time. because they are part of the vows, they are said. and i'm sure, in almost every single case, at that particular time, they are felt and meant. but people change and situations change. |

I agree w/ Tina they need to be rewritten for todays time. Back in our grandparent's day they meant something. Today it's more like when the tuff gets going your partner bails!

Unfortunately I think thats true, people don't "think" about the meaning of the words.

I guess for the same reason the words I Love You are tossed around as if they have no meaning either. People just say what they think others want to hear. Instead what they are really feeling!!

I believe that the vows, by middle-aged people, are understood to be the real deal. We have seen death, and dying loved ones, and the strains that demand adulthood to survive well.
When I was young, I had no appreciation for the span of time. The devotion and faith in each other was a new experience. I hope for it to always remain new, to overwhelm me with appreciation each day, as it is beyond me to comprehend the depth and life that my mate devotes to us. That is...if ever I fall in love again. |
