If in person.. they won't keep eye contact with you, they'll look away when speaking.

They get very defensive over a simple question asked..

Their need to "explain" themselves when not asked.

They turn a question around to put the blame on you.

Just a few ways... you can usually tell. ohwell

it depends on who they are...if it is someone I'm close to I can tell by their eyes...they won't look at me when they are lying.

sometimes. there ARE hints you can use to find out, of course-

1. shifty eyes-

if the person's lying, he/she will make it a point to keep from looking you in the eyes. they'll just keep darting they gaze everywhere else BUT you, probably to keep from seeing the liar for what he/she really is.

2. stuttering and stammering-

the liar will stutter and stammer and hem-and-haw when trying to talk to you about the lie. it'll either be because the liar is trying to get his story straight, or because the person is trying to keep his/her conscious in check.

3. profuse sweating-

the liar will all of a sudden "start to feel real warm" causing sweat to occur. people who are telling the truth are normally cool-and-collected as they have nothing to hide, while liars have a LOT to hide and don't wanna get found out. sweaty palms can also be included as potential liar behavior.

4. shifting/fidgeting-

the liar will start to be real "impatient" as he/she's got the lie on his/her mind.

a GREAT example of what a liar will do can be seen in ex-President Bill Clinton's video taped deposition during the Monica Lewinsky-impeachment thing- he was calm and cool when talking about stuff NOT pertaining to his little lie, but when the topic got a "little too close for comfort" with regard to his lies, he starts to get rather avoidant, among other things.

That is very interesting. Do you think they can also suffer from "memory lapse" when asked about the lie?

yes. in fact, that's another give-away-

if they suddenly "can't recall" various facts that should be readily obvious under normal circumstances, then the person's lying out his/her keester.

and by "can't recall", i don't mean little things, like the color of someone's tie or some other insignificant fact- if the liar can't recall whole names, streets, or other major things that a person telling the truth would have no trouble recounting, the person's fibbin' like a fibber.

Yes I thinking that myself. Why do some people make a career out of lying?

Ummm...let's see here.....

Three of those four things are things that I sometimes do naturally ( with no lying involved ) because of my somewhat twitchy nature.
