After using it for about a year and a half, I'm about to format my computer and install Windows XP Media Center. Keep me in your thoughts,

Everyone hates Vista but I have had no trouble what so ever with my Windows Vista machine....I bought this computer as soon as Vista released and i've had no trouble or compatibility issues with Windows itself.
I've had 100% fewer problems with Spyware and viruses on Vista compared to my XP machine. |

Vista only works properly with just-released new technology. If your system is even a YEAR old, you will have problems. This goes despite all the "older computers will work with Vista too!!!" malarkey that M$ keep trying to reassure people about.
I've got a friend with a computer with the same components as mine. Instead of heeding my warnings and going for XP, he went with Vista and has had nothing but trouble and hardship ever since. Scanners that worked like a charm in XP simply won't even start up in Vista. Video cards freeze up at the slightest provocation even with new drivers. Programs that choke up when started up. Blue Screens of Death that pop up at a moment's notice. If you've got a system older than... say... six months old, you're quite simply boned beyond recognition and are better off sticking with XP. |

This computer came with Vista, so I didn't really have a choice at the beginning.
My biggest complaints were that the media center portion wouldn't always start up. It just refused. Also Civ IV would play for a while, if you turned off their user account control feature, then refuse to start at all later. Eventually it wouldn't even uninstall or reinstall. Neverwinter Nights 2 never worked on Vista. I also resented that I had to use the administrator password to delete an icon off of the desktop. I think the biggest thing that kept me from reinstalling Vista is that all I had was a restore disk, and I've added two tv tuner cards and a video card to the machine as well as ram, and I'm not sure it would restore properly. I just feel safer with an actual install disk. I think some of the hue and cry about Vista is hyperbole, but I didn't really have a problem with the old one. Then again, I'm the guy who ran Win95b from beginning to WinXP. Skipped 98, Millennium, 2000, and whatever else they put out. |

I have a catch-22. The network card isn't working, apparently needs new drivers. However the drivers aren't on disk locally but available on the internet.
It's a good thing I have another computer, but I wonder how they expect someone with only one to do an install like this. I swear I had less trouble installing mythbuntu. |

Finally got the network drivers installed. It's all falling into place now.
Noting more to see here. |

Still will never go with vista here, Took way to long to even get a beta working let along working public beta version. WAY to many verions, Most parts vendors didn't even get copies of the code to make drivers. When 98 came out they were allready working on vista and it took 5 yrs after xp before a beta was even close and too even get it to that point had too strip everything way back or remove alltogether. Another ME failure if you ask me.

My current Computer has vista basic, had it for about a year and a half I think, and have reformatted and reinstalled everything half a dozen times. that includes manually reloading over 1000 songs off of cd. I HATE VISTA

Now I've reformatted and started over with a Windows computer before, but why so many times in that period. I usually do it about once every 6 months.
