...die Augenlider zu erpressen.

[With this heart I have the power
to blackmail the eyelids.]

Why do people look at an act of kindness as a selfish act done only to better oneself? Why does me giving someone change or money to pick up the end of their food in someway translates to my own selfish agenda?

because people are jaded and cynical and view the world only as they see. they are incapable of doing such a act thus the whole must beaswell.

Why is it looked at that way? What profit do I get from picking up the end charge of a bunch of groceries? What gratification can be sought from such a selfless action? I feel better about myself, but that alone is not the sole motivation behind the act.

should it matter what the drive behind it is? I don't know anyone who does something good hearted, and then feel bad about themselves about it... Just saying.

Phebe!

But to answer the opening post. I do not understand why people feel the need to think like that. I mean sure helping somebody in need is going to make me feel better that they are a little happier. But in no way shape or form am I going to gloat about it just to get glory for myself. I do it to help them.

i think if you do it because it makes you smile thats not the ad thing. i think its when people do it with hidden agendas.
people forget thats what compassion is. doing something to help someone and then it also helps you, makes you a better person or just makes you smile knowing that you have made a differece andthats not a bad thing!

Fear..as far as I am concerned, whether it makes you feel better about yourself is totally irrelevant. The fact that you do things like that, no matter what your motivation for doing it is, speaks volumes about you as a person.

My friend, her boyfriend her son, and two of their friends went to South Carolina for a short vacation, on the way back (driving) they stopped at a local diner and met a woman who had lived in her car for 4 months with her son, had just gotten a mobile home donated to her, my friend gave the woman $30 out of her purse (all the cash she had left from her trip) and sent an email to all of her friends asking that everyone send her $1 annon. with a note that says "enjoy your new home"

It made me cry thinking of living in a car with my own daughter, and how lucky I am to have never had to go through something like that. I didn't think differently of my friend (she is like me and does that kind of thing all the time) but it sure did make me proud to call her friend...not that I needed more reason...

Pay it forward.... it's her motto in life... it should be everyone's...
