The Hurt Again

When you've been in love
As deep in love as I have been,
You know your heart is shattered
You've lost your best friend.
No one else in the world mattered
For you were the one for me,
How in hell do I go on
With a love that used to be?

I don't want the hurt again
The pain of falling in love,
Where I give all I can give
And all that I'm made of.
If ever I fall in love again
Which will be hard to do,
I don't want another hurt again
Like the one I had with you.

If that special someone does find
A way to get into my heart,
Will I be afraid to fall in love
Just so my world will fall apart?
The anguish and the tears do come
Because I want to feel love again,
But the fear of a shattered heart
And the fear of losing a friend.

Marriages that failed in life
Of which I thought were true,
Now I look upon my future
And wonder what I need to do.
I don't want to feel the hurt again
Will love ever lay upon this heart?
Without the damaging effects
That would tear my world apart?

One day Robert we will all find that love that feels natural and will be ever lasting. No more hurt no more pain but only love to gain.

So true Kristi..and if we can break down those barriers around our hearts or someone else's, then we have gained a lot of ground.

Actually in reality do we break those walls down ourselves or do they just seem to dissolve when another touches them?

Good question...hopefully with the right words and emotions, they dissolve.

Awwwww Sweetie - I can feel your pain and fear....and believe me I understand Darlin'...........Once burnt, twice shy, thrice OMG what the heck am I doing!!!

The first cautious step, if chosen, can take time.....just go with the flow, be comfortable where you are, love your children as well as yourself, and if/when she comes along, you and she will find your way into each other's hearts without even realizing it.....One day....you'll just be together - rocking on the porch.....

A little bit of both, I think if we are willing to allow it to happen.

Well written. You've expressed the fear of all who have experienced the death of a marriage.
For many, there is nothing that could be done, once a heart has been hardened.
Unfortunately, the love you felt is still there and you grieve over the loss of the object of that love.
Fortunately, all it takes is the choice to risk being hurt for the gift of loving again.
And, it can be done. It didn't kill you the last time.
And, it is probably worth it, don't you think?

Just awesome!!! For anyone who has gone through the loss of love feels this way.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. This is not really a poem based upon what happened to me, but something I feel that everyone has inside of them. Yes, I suffered the pain and hurt, as we all have at one point or another. And it is difficult to go out there trusting and believing in love again.
