1 person 1 date, met my quota for the year so I'm good. I might have pursued things further but there were just too many red flags. I've met one other person since who seems pretty awesome, but she's overseas and I can't afford a trip over there right now.

Yes, it can/does work.
It is a unique and special set of values and character for each of the couples that "find" each other. Timing is critical; therefore patient persistence is necessary. Like any game of life, being a bystander and watching the game is not going to get you into the action, much less win any prizes.  Laura  and I met here. Many others have discovered each other in this venue. Be yourself. Because if you're not "real" then this place will chew you up like dog biscuits.
