This is a thread on "Saints". I will not tell you who the Saint is, but you can guess it. If you get it right we continue with another saint or if you can create a saint at a period of time that makes him unique without using his name then please do so.

Name this Saint!

This particular Saint that I am writing about lived during the Roman era of Christian persecution. Young men and women of the time were encouraged to worship pagan gods and were forbidden marriage. This, and other sacred rites were performed in private places by priests risking their lives for the spiritual welfare of others. Now, this saintly priest I am talking about was also a physician and a healer, working with herbs and a kind of alternative therapy that these days may be termed holistic healing. A true healer believes in the healing power of every human being, and helps to liberate the systems of those who are sick. Considering that this priest was also a physician, or it could be the other way around, he was a much sought after healer.

But first he was a priest.

And this is what got our Saint in trouble. The authorities found out about him perhaps through his healing works, or maybe word leaked out he was marrying people against the rules, but they either knocked on his door one day or banged it down with a hefty beam, wherever your imagination takes you, and dragged him into a dungeon to suffer for his Christian beliefs.

Before this happened there was a jailer at this same dungeon who had a daughter suffering from an illness. Our Saint's sympathy went out to the Roman jailer and the girl, and the Saint worked for many months, perhaps years, on a cure. When our Saint was thrown in the clink the girl visited him, perhaps out of gratitude and to cheer him up with a bit of hope. On the day the Saint was to be thrown to the lions or boiled in oil, he wrote a letter to the girl and gave it to her father, the jailer. The Saint said, "give this to her." When the girl opened up the letter a yellow crocus, a sign of the first rite of spring, fell from the folds of the Saint's hurried scrawl.

The girl was cured and our Saint went the route of so many other persecuted souls of that time, and the jailer felt remorse that he could not let the Saint go, or maybe that he did not let him go? Oh, miracles are worked with a two-edged sword, indeed.

So, who is our Saint of the day?

okay here we go with the next Saint!

This particular saint suffered for many years with a cancerous wound on his leg, but he never gave up asking and praying for a healing.

I hope that whatever it is you are struggling with in your life you will ask one of God's Saints to help you, and that you never give up on prayer.

It is said that this Saint is invoked for healing of cancer, AIDS, and other serious disease.

Prayers to this Saint is:

For Sick Relatives and Friends

We honor you, St. xxxxxx, as a mighty wonder worker, because of the miracles obtained through your intercession for persons who had recourse to your kind and powerful prayers. For many years you were afflicted with the same cancerous disease from which thousands now suffer. When the power of man could so no more, you were favored with a vision of Jesus leaning down from His cross and touching and healing you.

Trusting in your compassion and readiness to help, we request your prayerful support for our sick relatives and friends. (Pause here and silently recall the names of the sick persons for whom you are praying.)

May the gracious blessing of Almighty God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, descend upon all our sick relatives and friends. May it be accompanied by the complete cure which they desire and for which we pray.

Intercede for us all, Saint xxxxxx, that we may be sincerely grateful for every healing, every favor and grace from the Lord God, who is ever glorified in His saints.

Amen.

Okay this is a easy one!

He is known as the husband of Mary, and foster-father of Jesus. His prominence as Mary's husband and protector of the Holy Family gives him a particular place in the history of the church, and in the world. Many schools and societies are named after him, placing their confidence in his guidance and example of forbearance in the face of adversity.

He was a carpenter and carved tables, chairs and stools, standing in the shavings with his Son, teaching Him the value of work and showing the Child the way. This Saint is a patron Saint of workers. The Holy Family is often thought of as poor, yet there is documentation that this Saint provided for his family, and that they lived a comfortable life.

This Saint I speak of, though humbly taking his part in the extra-ordinary circumstances of his Son's birth, listened to God, and abided justly by His directives. He had the respect of his wife and Son, which proves that he used his honored position with wisdom, and discretion. Little is written about him in the bible, his place is in the background, the quiet strength behind Mary, and a force of conduct for his favored Son.

Often depicted in pictures as an elderly father figure, his age is disputed among scholars. Some say he had to be young to take his family on rigorous journeys. However, he could have been older, given the grace of strength for his travels, and most agree that he was probably not that much older than Mary.

Imagine living in those times, fleeing from Roman soldiers, holding the mission entrusted in your heart and never knowing what was beyond the next corner. His mission, and that of Mary's, was never spelled out for them. And like Mary, he was a person of faith. That is how he lived God's will, going from one event to another and acting on the guidance of an angel sent to him in dreams. He viewed his purpose with a clear perspective of the character and virtues of the people around him. His faith was based on a God he trusted, fashioned perhaps on years of sustained belief by the example of his own parents, family and friends.
