I am putting in new windows and trying to find level and square places. Saw where one person put a shelving unit inside of an old window where the house had been added on to. I was just wondering if there are others out doing fixer uppers by themselves.

I am not sure if this would apply to the part of the world you live in. I find that visiting a reclaimers yard to be quite helpful when restoring an old home. The last house I tinkered with had woodworm in some of the floorboards, it was an awkward size ( the house was over 150 years old) and the new flooring in the DIY shops did not fit and was also expensive. I visited the reclaimers and found exactly what I wanted and at a much cheaper cost than replacing the flooring with new boards.

We don't have any reclaimers that I know of but have found some second hand stores that collect after old houses have been torned down. One of my nurse friends gave me two pick loads of extra toungue groove flooring that she had left over from redoing her livingroom. In my new room project I plan to use them in a room that will be 23 feet by 12 feet. It will become the new living room as the living room I have now will be a dining room and I will be able to get the kitchen table in the dining room. I am planning have a concrete pad since the 4 by 4 risers from the ground to the flooring cause all of my flooring I have now to creak as one walks over them. I watching the show, "This Old House" where they use this glue on the flooring. As time, money and labor permits I plan to do some major renovations.

That's cool, can you post pics of the finished project?

I should be able to when I get my scanner hooked back up. I have some pictures of digging out the dirt by hand. One of my windows is going to become a door place. I am also going to take the door to the dining room and put it in the new living room along with the window I am going to take out. It will probably take me a while to finidh because of the weather and days off to do the job.

That's it, when you are paying your money why should you take second best?

My brother is tearing down the house we grew up in. He got a loan to build a new house and said if I helped to tear down the house I could have the lumber from it. So far my brother-in-law is helping to so its going to be who gets there first to help tearing down. It is really cold here so the new room project is going to be slow. But I should be able to get atleast lumber to make the forms for the concrete pad.

Well let me tell u about the City of Lakevold. There is an old geezer from Public Works that drives around my housing area, and loves to ticket people without work permits.
If you see him, he is old, white hair, wears glasses, and drives a Public Works white mini van.
Now any work I have done that needs a permit, I went out and got. That includes moving a washing machine, getting a new water heater, building a shed, and redoing the fence.
I kinda sorta know a few things.
However, because I found out this geezer was trying to scare me, I declined to take out a rehab loan with the City of Lakevold for 60k. So sorry city, u don't get my money, and that is what it is all about for those of you out there new at this....
IMA seasoned old bird when it comes to contractors.bigsmile blushing

I live in a 140 year old Victorian home in Patchogue. I have been renovating it for the last 27 years. I have enjoyed every minute of blood, sweat, and tears. It is an amazing feeling to restore this grand old lady to her historic beauty. There were two houses built in Patchogue at the same time and mine was one of those two. I have learned a great deal over time and would love to answer any questions anyone might have.
