The next time you hear a politician talk casually about spending a billion dollars of tax money, consider this:

A billion seconds ago, it was 1959.

A billion minutes ago, Jesus was still alive.

A billion dollars ago, was 8 hours and twenty minutes at the rate our (U.S.) government spends money.

Now consider the Taxes you pay:

Federal income tax, corporate income tax, federal unemployment tax, dog license tax, fishing license tax, hunting license tax, drivers license tax, gasoline tax, inheritance (or death) tax, inventory tax, liquor tax, tobacco tax, luxury tax, medicare tax, real estate tax, social security tax, sales tax, RV tax, school tax, state income tax, state unemployment tax, vehicle liscence tax, vehicle property tax, watercraft registration tax, workers's compensation tax, utilities tax, vehicle sales tax, telephone federal service fee (tax), telephone state and local surcharge tax, telephone recurring and non-recurring charges tax, telephone state and local tax, 911 tax, telephone usage surcharge tax...

Few of these taxes existed years ago when America first became the most prosperous nation on earth. There was little or no national debt. We had the largest middle class in the world. Mom could still stay home and raise the kids.

Will Rogers was right: "It costs ten times as much to govern us now as it used to, and we are not governed one-tenth as good."

You are so right about the children and we wonder why so many are running amuck..With all going on in the world we need to take our children under our arm..And not just our children but any child that needs some love. Its sad, there are a lot of children out there that just wants someone to love them..There is no greater feeling than hearing..You have been like a father/mother to me..Sped the love and hug a child today...

Amen Doug...I see we meet again...flowerforyou

My children are grown and on their own,
but they still need me from time to time
& their own dad passed away 7 years ago...
I also have little Grandchildren too...

I love all kids & really try to be there
for them, & you are so right about so
very many kids running amuck these days.

it is because they are not getting the supervision that they need
and some decent moral fiber needs to be
seriously instilled in them...
& a code of ethics that is lacking
in so many people these days...
and it all starts with being a
responsible adult who has some
class & integrity & good values
a faith & belief in God is essentialflowerforyou

Hey Vanessa!! Thanks for stopping by!! I'm used to having short threads, probably because the phone hangs up enough, that I get tired of reconnecting to the internet and shut the computer off for the evening.laugh

It's a shame that society feels such pressure to succeed that we've lost the willingness to sacrifice for our own sakes. The necessity of the two income family to maintain the standard which we all strive for is killing the ability to maintain a family core. This probably accounts for the increases in divorce rate as well, because of the added stress which a couple will naturally take out on each other.

Ahhhhhhh...

you are absolutely right, my Dear Jamie ...drinker

i think also though ,
that with the high cost of living,
many people are really not greedy...
they are just trying to survive ...
It costs an incredible amount
of money to raise a familysad

and with many husbands unable
to make the kind of money needed
to pay all of the bills and to put
nutritious food on the table everyday , drinker
and the endless amount of money
needed to fill the gas tank ,frown
and for insurances, car repairs
and the myriad of things deemed
necessary in today's living ...
the wives are being forced frown
to leave their homes & families,
to just make ends meet sad

Not a problem Vanessa. The numbers are definately staggering.

Hey, thanks for all the inspirational stuff you send my way too. There are some mornings, I need those things. blushing

Like I'm any better. When was the last time I sat down and wrote you one of my updates? The tomatos in my garden are starting to redden up by the way. But I'm afraid I'm drifting....

offtopic oops

If the government can spend a billion dollars in eight hours, why can't I get the potholes fixed in the mile stretch between my brothers house and mine?

Thats a question for your State not the federal government. Some states don't even have income tax, so again roads are a state problem.

As for today, mom can still stay home and raise the kids, but a lot of women choose to join the work force and if thats their goal then more power to them.

We had way less people when our government was founded, way less technology, and way less government run programs. Look at every other country that is industrialized like us and you will see that they follow the same basic trend, but maybe not as extreme.

drinker Nice to hear from you Jamie flowerforyou and Hi Chazster ! drinker

 I don't have a problem with anyone drifting off topic,as you know,
being the meandering lag queen...
in fact, i like it...laugh

Ripe Tomatoes? ooooooooohhhhh...

You know us Italian Sicilians
and our love for ripe tomatoes..

Heck, i can't grow any here in the city, in my garden amidst a mass of concrete & sky scrapers
With all the hungry homeless street people,
and no fencing, smack dab in the middle of town...
they would get picked before they were red sad

My Mother tells me that my Great Grandmother from Sicily would just cook her tomatoes on very low all day on the old wood cook stoves and simmer them <now we have crock pots, and they cook on the sides, so it doesn't have to be stirred as much and doesn't burn on the bottom.> and as she got older, and couldn't see as well,
she'd pick her broccolli & then put it in boiling water and all the green inch worms that blended into the green of the broccolli would rise to the top and Grandma would just scoop them out laugh
a little extra protein never hurt anyone...
just don't use those nasty pesticides ...flowerforyou

and yes, you are right
in what you were saying in the above post...drinker
i think that some woman
would be able to stay home, for sure, flowerforyou
if their lifestyles weren't so extravagant, sick
but that is a whole other story laugh

I was talking to a gentleman the other day that talked about how we've changed. Things that weren't even expenses 30 years ago are mainstream expenses now.

You didn't have to pay to watch TV in 1975
You didn't have to pay an internet bill in 1975
Most people still sent letters, postage was under a dime.
Name brands for kids was "tough skins" (man you couldn't destroy those things)
Getting cuts meant Mom would kiss it and make it feel better, not a trip to the doctor.
People bought what they could afford, not buy extravegant things on credit.

Can a Mom (or Dad) be stay at home now? You bet. But what I'm saying, and obviously the point I haven't been able to make, is as a society we are so competetive with each other (Bob got a boat, now I have to get one, or Johnson got a new car, I need a fancier one), that we have forgotten the things that are important. We will spend past our income just so we can have an appearance of being "well off." No one is willing to live a simple life anymore. Children have very little imagination because the are stuck in front of an "idiot box" so they have a baby sitter. Go outside and play, forget it, they've already got a PS3, a WII and an Xbox to got with the computer in their room, and they don't have time because parents buy them cell-phones so they can text their friends.

How many of us had permission to even call friends when we were kids? Our own phones, weren't invented, but I guarentee my Mom would have said "when you can pay the bill." We would be thrown outside to play because "I don't need that TV running up the electric bill." This is why we need a stay at home parent, maybe our children wouldn't be so fat.

RoamingOrator's photo

Oh, I forgot to address the taxes thing.

Don't you think that if government streamlined and got rid of unnecessary programs we could spend those billions a little wiser, even send some down to the state? Federal money consists of anywhere between 60-80% of highway funding, they posts signs saying as much where I live. Why do yo suppose Alaska made pot illegal, the same reason Montana posted a speed limit, to keep federal transportation funding.

I think you are being stereotypical. I have a custom PC, xbox, wii, and will be buying a ps3 but I am not fat and don't live past my means. If I want something i save up until I can afford it. I set money aside until I have enough to buy what I want. Its all about how parents raise their kids and teach them the value of money. Since I was little my parents made my sister and I both do chores and if we did them we got an allowance. They only bought us necessities and we used our allowances for anything else we wanted (or if we wanted more expensive clothes then they would pay for, my sis usually used hers for this).

My sister and I also had jobs through high school. Our parents bought us a car the summer before our senior year, but only if we paid insurance and if we had a whole years worth of insurance saved up before they bought the car.

My point is people act a certain way around money because they were not told how to properly use it.

RoamingOrator's photo
Wed 07/30/08 03:20 PM
I can agree with you on that point Chaz, people sure don't teach children the value of money much anymore. It's good to see someone that appreciates that their parents made them work for their money. I see so many that don't appreciate the money their parents give them with no chores invovled.

I can remember when we were kids, Grandpa would make us work all day walking beans, and at the end of the day, we'd get a shiny new half-dollar. My brother, being older, realized he was getting ripped off immediately and did the same job for Taylors at $6.00 an hour. I worked for Grandpa, sure he didn't pay well, but I got to go fishing in the evenings.

Glad we can agree. I think that Americans not knowing how to manage money is a big problem in our country that could easily be resolved. Money management classes or something. Even just being taught when its a good idea to use a credit card or when its a horrible idea.

Of course we need to send the government to a money management course. How can the government keep bailing out all these companies with money it doesn't have?

Sounds like the companies need that money management as well or they wouldn't need to be bailed out. Maybe they should just add money management as a required Highschool elective and hopefully the next generation will work itself out.

RoamingOrator's photo

Nothing wrong with the companies, it's just the free market system. It's like bailing out GM (which is being considered), totally unnecessary for government intervention.

I bet the last company around that made horse drawn buggies was a good one, but it went the way of the dodo. Nobodies fault, their product was just useless. I'm sure they didn't get bailed out.

Airlines, banks, these things fail because they can't compete in the free market system. There are still others around, so why must we bail out every one that fails? No one's going to bail out my little store when it goes broke, so why bail out a big one? For the investors? Losing money is also part of investing. If you can't afford it, don't invest it.
