Does wisdom really come with age?

I know some older individuals that make the worst mistakes. Mistakes I stopped making about 6 years ago.

Or does wisdom come from life experience?

Does someone that has experienced more strife in their life have more wisdom versus someone that has been cuddled their whole life by money and comfort?

I see that in some cases, I am asked to give advice because I allow myself to be open for people to come to me. Some times that is advice requested by individuals about 10 years older than me. If wisdom comes with age, than why are they seeking my prespective. Or does it just mean that with age, you realize that you need an outside opinion and youth will not ask for an outside opinion.

I think it has a lot of do with a little of all above, and intelligence and how you carry yourself.

I have experienced a lot of life in my almost 28 years, domestic violence, substance use, having alcoholic family members, being homeless, being in poverty, living a middle class life, going to college, being a single parent, striving for an education that would normally be out of my reach, and a bunch of positive and negative experiences tucked in between.

My boyfriend he has a similar outlook on life like me, but has experienced different things, some positive, some negative... and he also is sought after for advice from friends and some of them older.

So wage in, do you think wisdom simply comes from getting older, or from life experience or is some people born to have more knowledge than others?

both, the longer you live, the more you experience, the more you learn.....as the years pass, you will find more than is existent at this time

There's no real good way to measure wisdom that accurately. Maybe wise people are wise from the get-go and then just procede to get wiser as they age! And if you are not chosen to be one of the "wise ones" it ain't never happenin' fer you!

I went back to school and was worried the younger people straight out of 14 years of school would out-do me. Nope. In fact I know much more than most and pulled straight a's.

Age does help even things out. I would not say it is superlative though.

The same thing happened to me but I took a longer break. I think that when we go back, we take it more seriously.

I probably am more focused like CB said, but still not as focused as I could be b/c of life stuff. But I take it more seriously and I have a good goal and see the end in site.

You know how to make the best use of your time. You know how your head will accomplish a task when assigned.

laugh destiny, I'm not so sure about that, most of the time I feel like a chicken with my head cut off... and before I am all down with higher ed..... it will be qbout another 8 years or so... and then I might go right into university level teaching... I guess I am just a glutton for punishment.

I think that I just know what I am suppose to do now, compared to having no clue before.

oh well.

anyways... I'm out of here... everyone keep the discussion going... i'll be in tomorrow to check the thread.

I feel the same, wisdom comes from a combination of both...if you're open to learn from your experiences, that is. We all know people older and more experienced whose lives have been full of strife, yet they repeat the same behaviors and fall into the same situations time and again, and are still doing so. This doesn't seem all too wise to me.

While experience is the ultimate teacher, and age gives us more opportunities TO experience things, having the courage to insight changing in our lives as needed and desired, gives us even more experiences to draw wisdom from than age alone can.

I would add to time and experience, the courage to change and the ability to learn to the list of ways we collect wisdom as well. IMHO

Once again Tanya, an excellent thought provoking topic! flowerforyou  flowerforyou
