I like a stick of dynamite linked directly to my firewall. If they try to take control of my computer... I'll stop those b@st@rds! explode

as far as security goes, I don't mind paying for it if it works really well. I've been using zone alarm and it seems to work well but I was curious what else is out there.

zone alarm isn't bad but not that great ethier it gets high ratings on sites just like norton because of deals...look into black ice for a good firewall

cool, I've never even heard of black ice before. I guess companies like Norton and Zone Alarm just have really shiny add huh! Enough flashy adds and people will think its perfect.

yep pretty much zone alarm is not a bad program it just uses alot of resources...black ice is a lesser known firewall which is also good as the hackers won't probe it as much

Thanks for the tip. I'm not super paranoid or anything as I refuse to do online banking or anything like that. it more the idea of hackers. I'm not sure why they have to prey on small hard working people when they can have a go at large companies and get a real challenge if thats all their looking for!

online banking is safe just don't save your log in name and password when windows prompts you for it it gets stored on the banks sever...and always make sure your bank site starts with https not just http

Adaware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Free Registry Fix isn't too bad, Trend Micro offers a free online virus scan that is always updated, be sure to clear private data, keep a decent firewall.... frustrated

Or you could just get a Mac. drinker

Anything worth while that will proactivly help your computer would require changing system paramaters (options).

Honestly, use firefox, grab spybot or adaware, and pandasoft's free trial. Run pandasoft once, then run spybot. Every week or so run spybot or adaware. That takes care of really anything that can be taken care of on your computer.

If your talking about not being able to 'break in' to your computer, thats simple. you don't have to do anything. They can't unless they install a virus in your computer, which pandasoft or spybot would pick up. honestly, your chances are about nil for that to happen.

I personally use a router. Best for blocking alot of things. Your ip, and you can be invisible. And you can have better security with one. Zone alarm is weak, Like one said "since it is free" And I personally tried it. to many problems, And zonealarm comes with spyware on it. Norton is pretty much a joke. I have had viruses attached to the updates, They get hacked so much. And all of the people I know personally have had so many problems with Norton.
Trend Micro; I feel has never let me down. But I do pay for the software. I also use the Windows Xp, And CCleaner, Windows Defender. I am in college and I use many programs that are open to internet use.

"Break in" That is if you are only on dial up, Since your ip changes everytime you plug into the internet. Most i.p.'s are static, Which means they don't alway's change. If you are on dsl, cable or so on..The only way to not get hacked when using high speed internet service is if you shut your computer off completely. I personally have a buddy that has software that seeks out active ip addresses, and he has software that can hack into your computer as long as it is on the net. You wouldn't even know unless you have a router. or some other type of software that alerts you.

For good security you'll want good Firewall, AntiVirus, AntiSpyware/Malware securing your perimeters.

Finding good apps isn't difficult, configuring them properly can be a challenge for some. For most of my clients I'll configure a set of protective apps geared specifically to their use, pc literacy and patience level. Generally an end user could care less about the difference between TCP and UDP.

As far as resources are concerned todays PC's are usually configured with just enough RAM, and good protection is going to create some latency out-of-the-box with their required scans. So you'll want to up the memory and swapfile accordingly.

Despite the learning curve VISTA, with its poor introduction is probably the most secure OS that MS has introduced to date. However like a good guard dog, it and the better security apps need to be trained correctly to do their job well or risk being disabled for convenience.
