A country that looses its moral compass deserves to wither away.

Oh yeah...why don't you try this logic on the mid eatern countries...see where that gets you. (Shot in the head is all or tortured to death) NICE!

Its the "middle east"...and pointing the finger back at someone else doesnt relieve you of your own moral downfall....

We ARE the good guys. Our problem is when we get involved trying to help clean up other countries problems. Come to think of it... if we didn't get involved in fighting the war with Hitler all of europe would have remained under tierany. So before you start pointing fingers just let's be clear on this...WE ARE STILL THE GOOD GUYS!

Back 20 yrs. ago when they were debating NAFTA & GATT Americans did not want it....we knew it was going to be more trouble but the wealthy only wanted to line their pockets with money. We were called all sorts of names... which, BTW, your country did make out well from. So stop blaming America when there are MANY countries who are still so backward that we are all paying for. WE ARE STILL THE GOOD GUYS!

There might be a bigger link than one figures between 9/11 and the question 'madisonman' raises in this thread:

'are the US the good guys'

... and more importantly, if so, why has the US resorted to so many 'illegal' (non-agressed, non-war) covert (cover your traces) activities around the globe for so many decades (took over from the 'brits' circa WWII).

And while we might recognize the principle of 'take no prisoners', as in leave no trace of your presence in times of war, as Fanta correctly points out, 'madisonman' raises the infamy of those tactics WHEN AND WHERE THERE WERE NO WARS!

Belushi, gave it to us in a nutshell, and I paraphrase:
'the empire of any era will be the target of much hatred from other 'sovereignties' whom have had to suffer the abuse of the ever so needy and power grabbing compulsion of the 'ruling empire of the day'.

As Belushi said, "... this is not US bashing...", but rather, it is a straight look at the degenerative and self-destructive make-up of any 'empire'.

How many empires need to fall for the world to integrate the 'bigger lesson' tought by atrocious and despearate acts such as 9/11???

Every single empire which SELF DESTRUCTED in the past, had serious warnings, not unlike '9/11'.

That's right, a warning! A sort of universal and anonymous 'THAT'S ENOUGH' that the Macbethian ruling factious will either hear, ...or more often than not, will deny.

As OCEAN points out:

A country that looses its moral compass deserves to wither away.

But is there a way out for 'empires'? Can an empire 'get' the bigger lesson taught by such unspeakable, yet seemingly intrinsically linked 'action-reaction' equation such as 9/11?

As John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton, or 'Johnny' for short gave us:

"... Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men."

The greater lesson to be drawn by the empires of the day, from the 9/11's, will most likely be missed simply because, like the MacBethian warnings of the downfall,
'... Empires have no lesson to learn from anyone. Great empires only impose THEIR LESSONS on everyone!" And that moral less mentality, is the start of the 'withering away' of all empires.

Again, the infamous 'POGO' comic strip comes to mind:

“We have met the enemy and he is us.”

As cited in this 2005 Bob Burnett article, an onother example of the profound disregard the US seem to have for the very principles IT CLAIMS to be fighting for around the world!!!

Again, it's not US bashing!!!

It's all about raising above the obvious shortcomings and inevitable self-destructive make-up which come with the domain of 'unconscious', and by definition, 'moral less' empires.

Why does their have to be good guys and bad guys?

Is it in keeping with your simple cowboy white-hatted attitude towards the world in general.

... and why pick these three countries?

Is it because you are told they are bad places? Can you not form an opinion on your own?

Why not go to Cuba and see the people loving and living the best they can. They are not some up-tight american worried about his or her country causing confusion by killing his own kind.
You judge other people's countries by your own moral compass when you have no imagination.

Have you been to Cuba? Oh no, of course, you cant. Your govt wont allow you. Unless of course you have been to g'tmo.

I have. Its a beautiful place. Full of history and marvellous people.

Its govt is not democratic, but then neither is yours.

You dont get a say in your policies, and neither do they.

The Cuban govt is in it for what they can get, and so is the US govt.

What's the difference?

Sigh! Another history lesson needed, I feel.
7 December 1941? Ring a bell? Couldnt have anything to do with the US joining the war.
Your govt didnt want to join the war in Europe. It was looking for an excuse to do so.

You have never been the good guys. You are a brash, young country with more toys than you know what to do with, and you insist on forcing your opinions on other people.

But as I said before. All countries who have the biggest weapons stockpile have done this before.

But be thankful that the Chinese dont have expansionist ideas. The US would be given it arse in its hand if they decided to yomp across the planet.

Back 20 yrs. ago when they were debating NAFTA & GATT Americans did not want it....we knew it was going to be more trouble but the wealthy only wanted to line their pockets with money. So, because you think you got screwed there, you go and invade other countries to devastate their infrastructure so that the US companies can come in and make a killing on rebuilding?

How is that being good?

Ah a point I have been attempting to get others to see for some time!
Also a point of debate between Presidential hopefuls at the current time!
One wishes to continue down the same path and ignore the warnings, while the other is condemned for trying to progress our nation to greater heights!
That being leading the world through respectful dialog as equals rather than assuming our way is the only way, your either with us or against us mentality that has lead us to the point we now find ourselves today!
Wouldn't it be nice to find the intelligence to lead the world with respectful consideration of others concerns, instead of bombing the sheet out of them all?

That's it!!! That's the essence that humans must cultivate and adhere to in order to rise above the imploding and self-destructive 'Empire takes all' model.

One more time, ... FANTA FOR PRESIDENT !!!

Fully agree with that.

Obama most certainly paves a road made of 'US', rather than 'ME's, MYSELVES' AND I's'.

When you set aside the petty 'partisan' politics of old, this man represents a truly new chapter.

He speaks WAY beyond the limiting and imploding EMPIRE straightjacket!!!

Now I see...those who think...no WISH...America to sink are just as bad as their govts.

Respectful dialog? I think it's called rolling over for thugs & bad guys. Like the clintons did. I guess all those who forget now will remember when DEMS get elected. I didn't forget how sick willie used the heavy hand of the law to go after a 6 yr. old boy. Bush would never stoop that low. Be very afraid all right...but not of REPS. There's a difference between not liking someone's politics & out & out lies. This is such a lie. THAT...will be our downfall.
