It seems my 18 year old niece smokes weed from time to time. I do not have any experience with it, but for those who do I am wondering what are the chances of her becoming a chronic user - i.e. "needing it every day"?

Marijuana has shown no significant sign of addiction, it is actually quite harmless. Check out Erowid.com if you have any concerns, it should put your mind at ease. |

I would not be worried until other drugs are involved.

Mentally yes, because it makes you feel good. But, it's less addictive than tobacco & caffeine. I wouldn't worry too much if it's an ocassional thing. She wouldn't be the first to experiment. It's if she wants to feel better with other drugs that you should worry. |

You're from Canada and you DON'T have experience with the ganja? I thought "The Great White North" was pot central!
As far as your question, I look at things this way- ANY drug will run the risk of becoming addictive to the point of being chronically abused, especially "gateway" drugs like pot and alcohol. The best way to deal with drugs is to simply NOT do them in the first place. |

Isn't it still illegal? Or am I being silly?

pot isn't addictive, its more you get used to doing it than being addicted to it. Its not hard to kick the habit. It's when it leads into other drugs that there may be a problem

Some people become psychologically dependent.
I worked in a dual diagnosis rehab. There were some people in there for pot. Alot of 18 year olds have smoked from time to time. I wouldn't be concerned yet. IMO. But it is something to watch. It could lead to other drugs. And it is illegal. |
