Thanks to looking at my AT&T phone bill for my cell phone I was able to get a refund from FlyCell and Thumbplay. Those free ringtones cost me $9.99 a piece. The free ring tone from OpenMarket cost me $19.99 but wasn't I able to get a refund. However, I did get to stop the auto rebilling.

If you get any messages from m-Qube Inc. or OpenMarket you might want to investigate it. Actually OpenMarket is the merchant contact for Thumbplay.

Jt, go to att.com/directbill if you have AT&T. It will ask for your phone number and will give a secret 8 digit number to type in. It will show the same thing that is on your phone bill. The difference it will give you the option of getting a refund if it is available and stop the auto rebill.

It irritated me because I always took free to mean free. It makes you wonder how much free should cost.

Here's an idea- DON'T DO ANY OF THAT FREE RINGTONE NONSENSE!!!

It's like the old saying goes- if it sounds too good to be true, it most probably is. And those free ringtone offers are DEFINITELY too good to be true.

And I find nothing wrong with the cheesy, poorly-produced ringtones already installed in my cell phone, too. Sure they suck... but THEY were free! laugh

i used to have a program on my comp that would convert MP3's into a ringtone format and then you could send them to your phone for free but i've reformatted since then and can't remember the name of the program ohwell

Good idea, moofooga. I went to the site offered by AT&T and entered the secret 8 digit number given by AT&T to stop m-Qube, Inc., OpenMarket and Mblox. m-Qube, Inc.'s description is Mobile Messeng: 71888#5842; OpenMarket's description is Thumbplay and Mblox's description is Flycell. It made no difference using the site because now the free ringtones have esculated up to $80 because I am still getting charged. My next step is when I go pay my bill to see if Radio Shack can stop them. If not I am going to discontinue service with AT&T. Enough is enough.mad

According to the site AT&T will stop the billing of these companies by 6/19 which allows them to charge me for additional month. Wow, they are like ticks. You pull the body off and the head still sucks you dry.

Yup. They totally are.

I get offers for free ringtones all the time for my Sprint/Nextel phone that typically come via SMS. I usually just delete them as

-as I've stated, most of them are pretty much scam operations designed to bilk you of your moolah,

and

- my phone doesn't do MP3s in the least... it'll only do that cheap, crappy polyphonic crap (and goes about doing it rather crappily as well).

Another thing you should look out for when dealing with these ringtone scams-

I've been fighting a fraudulent $2000 charge that was put on my account by some dolt in Mobile, Alabama. Apparently, said dolt purchased a half-dozen high-end Nextel phones using an SMS ringtone scam that someone at Nextel said I had signed up for.

"Au Contraire," I told them. I started out by asking them if they have any record of my accepting any ringtone offers. They looked up their records and found that I haven't sent ANYTHING in the way of ANY SMS messages via my phone, which would therefore mean that I didn't accept any SMS ringtone offers, period.

And I didn't authorize anyone to go out and buy $2000 worth of high-end Motorola/Nextel phones, either (heck- the one I use is one of their cheapest models, so WHY in the world would I allow someone to get the expensive stuff?) via any bogus ringtone thing, either.

It was later found that some idiot at Sprint/Nextel dropped the ball and allowed for my account information to be let out for scammers to get their greasy mitts on. Instead of coming clean and fixing the problem, they tried to pass the blame and the responsibility to me (via their bogus ringtone excuse), which is no bueno.

They've evidently corrected THEIR mistake and -once I get a bill with the bogus charge removed- I'll be taking my service to another carrier.
