I have been working for 2 days at my new job.

Before I even got hired, I had told my hiring manager that due to religious obligations, I would like to request Fridays and Sundays off. I was under the impression this was okay. When I went into work my first day he sat me down and made sure that I knew Fridays and Sundays were my days off. Lo and behold, I go into work today (thinking I had to work) and I have Wednesday off, but I work 4 hours on Friday and 7 hours on Sunday. By the time I get out of work on Sunday, bust as$ downtown to pick up my daughter, and then come back up to the east side of Wichita and start heading north, I will be 1 1/2 hours late to my church services.

Now, with that being said, I can understand them losing 4 employees on my first day of work because they were no-calls/no-shows and had major attitude problems and therefore there were only 3 of us on duty on a day we got slammed harder than ever in that particular restaurant's history, but I worked 9 hours straight with no break. My shift was supposed to be from 7AM-3PM, but I was busting patootie until 4PM.

My second day of work, again, scheduled from 7AM-3PM, and I worked until 3:30PM and again, NO BREAK!

I am just wondering, I have been there for 2 days and they are already stepping on my rights.

What should I do?

I am having to go in tomorrow for a 4 hour shift which is costing me more money in child care and gas than I will make. ($24 for 4 hours of work pre-tax. I made $25 tax-free for one hour of plasma donation, cash, today. I will make $40 on Friday for my second donation.)

I already complained once to my manager. Nothing has been done.

What should I do now?

So you are thinking that since they are already mistreating me and I have only been there for 2 days that this situation will not get better seeing as I already "allowed" it to happen to me for 2 days?

If its not worth it, quit... Things will not get better most likely. When I hire people I make sure we are all clear on what the schedule will be. If they can't work it I don't hire them. And if I agree with there schedule I don't change it.

I think employers will get away with anything they can....check your State laws...especially on the break issues.....however, sometimes it's not worth the fight ....sometimes it's just better to move on and find something better that works for you and your family!

Maybe sit down with the boss -man.....explain what you can/can't do and take it from there, if that's even possible. flowerforyou

letting you know that technically you don't have to recieve "breaks" in the food service industry. most places will consider the time that waitstaff does not deal with tables as a "breaktime" even if you are keeping bsy with sidework. same with hosts and busboys. and if you are working BOH well than say goodbye to any freetime ever. birthdays, holidays, special events no longer exist. its the backside of the industry we chose. sorry. but good luck with the new job.

Start looking and stand up and tell them how you feel.

I work at McDonald's. I was very clearly told during orientation that if we work more than 5 hours on a shift, we are allotted a 30 minute lunch and one 15 minute break.

I even took the time to clarify with the supervisor of my particular chain that if I tell them pre-hiring that I need certain dates of for religious obligations, that they will and can not, once it was agreed upon, schedule me on those particular days.

I had approved it with the hiring manager, it was on my application, I went over it again with the chain supervisor and on my first day there I verified once again with the manager and store manager that my schedule would keep those specific days free for me. I don't mind working other days, just not the ones I requested to have off.

This just sucks. I am only making $6/hr for a piece of crap, abusive job. The last time I worked for Ronald was 1998. He was kinder to his employees back then. Probably because he didn't serve Iced Coffees and Cappuccinos and Salads and Wraps and crap. IT'S FRIGGIN McDONALD'S, not Starbuck's.grumble

Oh well.

Back to the old job hunt we go!

(Keeping Ronald until I find something better cause we need the income.)

Well, I went in early today to try to discuss the scheduling and lack of breaks and they would not bend. So, I handed them my shirt and visor and said, "See Ya!"

Now to enjoy a few days of peace and quiet and the pool party on Saturday to celebrate the opening of the pool here at my complex! On Tuesday, we will see if I am going to get back in the rat race or just relax and enjoy my other 2 jobs.

welcome to the business I started at 14 and learned a break is usually when shift is over or when you can grab food in between tables, BUT usually after shift is over. Also schedules lol good luck I usually go in at 4 pm Saturday should be done by 9:30 but more than likely and almost always finish at 2-3 am only to be back by 9 am on sunday till 1 am

politely ask to talk with them and ask them if
you help them through this difficult time will
they make some kind of commitment to you which
would be of value to you.

emphasize your desire to be helpful to them but
explain how this is affecting you and see if you
can work out a compromise.

a good employer will understand your needs and
will try in some way to work with you. they will
really appreciate your assistance during a
particularly difficult time and will reward you
if they are smart.

if they do not understand and are unwilling to work
with you then you will have to go somewhere else
where they will value your time, work ethic and
assistance appropriately.

Actually, the manager that hired me fired 2 of the managers this morning. Right after I quit!

I talked to him later this evening when he came over to my bar to hang out and I told him, "Dude, if you really need me, I will work there again as a favor to you until you get the appropriate amount of staff back." He told me, "Baby, I am quitting in a week. I wouldn't ask you to go back there even if I was staying. They ****ed you big time and I am pissed off at them. I made sure your days off were on the computer and they STILL scheduled you in behind my back. I will not have you working for them."

About 30 minutes later I was taking one of the girls home and we stopped at a different McDonald's cause it is our nightly routine and I talked to the manager there cause at 2 AM, the managers are pretty bored not doing anything. She told me, "Come in any time, fill out an application for me and I will hire you at $7/hr." (That's $1 more than the former employer. $1 does count people. It really does count.)

So I am going to take the weekend to mull over it.

I really want to make sure I am making the right decision here. After all, this money I make at McD's goes to bringing my daughter back overseas to her father in Israel. Otherwise, I would just continue working at the bar and being a surrogate, cause I am really not strapped for cash.

I wish you all a lovely morning!

Hope you guys have a great day! I am going to sleep through most of it.

If we don't have a tornado scare, that is....
