Topic: The atheist and the marine

A United States Marine was attending some college courses between assignments. He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist and a member of the ACLU.

One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, 'God, if you are
real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes.' The lecture room fell silent.
You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, 'Here I am God. I'm still waiting.' It got
down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him;
knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold. The Marine went back to his seat and sat there silently.
The other students were shocked, stunned, and sat there looking on in silence. The professor eventually came to,
noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, 'What the heck is the matter with you? Why did you do that?'
The Marine calmly replied, 'God was too busy today protecting America’s soldiers who are protecting your right to
say stupid stuff and act like an idiot. So, He sent me.'

I liked that alot..not many people think about all the things that marines do to protext their beloved country and rights. I come from a family of marines, and it means alot to know that there is people out there who appreciate what we do...

I never realized that being a Christian was a prerequisite for being a marine?

Are you saying that there are no atheist marines?

That's news to me.

My father fought in WWII against the Japanese. Joined the Marines when he was 17. He was a Democrat and Liberal his whole life. Your story makes no sense. noway

What is so ironic (and somewhat sad) about this is that there are elements of relevance not far under the surface. Still I guess my heathen mind views it a different way. How many brave men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan of varying faiths (or none at all) prayed with every bit of their hearts that God would protect them where the stood for just fifteen minutes as bullets and hell were flying all around them? And how many came home in a flag covered coffin? While God sent the Marine to knock the professor off a platform for saying "stupid stuff and acting like an idiot" another Marine thousands of miles away could not care less--he's just hoping God isn't sick at sea.

Very Christ-Like by the by--knocking out a man for challenging God? Is that the best bit of irony we have to offer today? I know it wasn't literal--so enjoy, just thought it was interesting in several ways.

Regardless, every person serving has my respect and support.

As a pantheist I would look at it this way.

We are all God.
I am God.
That marine is also God.

God is everywhere, and in everything, but only one of us was needed to accommodate the professor's request.

God reached out and moved (channeled) itself through the toughest guy in the class.

God works in mysterious ways. bigsmile

Yes I do.bigsmile

After all, the professor was praying, and using the law of attraction.

Ask and it is given.

He asked. It was given... bigsmile

He was unknowingly channeling God

I'm a Christian and look at it this way.

I'm not God but am one of his children.

Jesus died for our sins.

That marine is also not God, but is one of His children.

God is in the smallest leaf, a flower, a tree.

The wonders of His creation are everywhere.

The professor mocked God and got what he deserved.

Sometimes I think many Christians are actually attracted to Christianity because it’s inherently a vengeful religion. It’s all about a vengeful God who gets even with his enemies. At least in the old testament.

Not so with Jesus, but it was the ways of the old God of Abraham.

Let’s face it, anyone who condones violence isn’t following in the footsteps of Jesus. They aren’t even prepared to turn the other cheek. They are lusting for an-eye-for-an-eye and a-tooth-for-a-tooth like the old God of Abraham.

They just use Jesus as a façade to hide behind, but they totally denounce his passive philosophy.

You can’t punch someone in the face in the name of Jesus. That’s totally oxymoronic and hypocritical.

If you want to follow Jesus you have to learn to restrain your egotistical tendencies to “get even”.

Those were the ways of the old God of Abraham. But Jesus denounced those ways and wrote a whole new set of laws. Jesus changed the rules. He changed the religion. It’s not what it used to be.

No more vengeance. It’s turn the other cheek now. If you want to follow Christ you have to denounce the violence that the God of Abraham used to lust for. Jesus changed all that. It’s turn the other cheek now.
