I don't know much about them but the negative side the media likes to hound on.

Anyone with a bad opinion of them, does the ban on bathing suit competition make them more acceptable to you?

i think its a little odd to have them in bathing suits... but i was a stage manager during a local one.... and its generally a very supportive environment.

I think there is nothing wrong with the pageants, but I do think it's bad when we hear the stories of overbearing parents who are more pushing their daughters when maybe the daughters aren't as passionate about the affairs.

A woman with experience....cool! Thanks for that (((Tanya))). I'm a little nervous about my niece being in one for the first time. flowerforyou

So if the daughter is the one pushing for it and the parents are hesitant...will that effect the teens confidence too do you think?

To me, pageant are about beauty queens; which means we are emphasizing the wrong thing. Why should girls have to strive to be beauty queens? They should be competing in academics and sports, in my opinion. Succeeding as a beauty queen prepares you for a life as a beauty queen - which means you are useless without someone else's support. It is the wrong message to send to a young girl.

I hope this one will be that kind of experience for her. She's never done this and the other 39 are all pros at it. She'll need the support. I am trying to give her support even though I don't really understand her desire to be in one really. I don't know the first thing about makeup and hair dos and fashion...but she loves it all. I know she will shine, but don't want her to burn out or be overly disappointed if it gets real competitive and she doesn't have the stomach for it. flowerforyou

She is really looking forward to singing also, and I'm hoping she concentrates more on that portion of the competition than others assessments of their idea of beauty. One nice thing is they are not allowed much makeup. I think that might be a step in the right direction and discourage a lot of the glamor hype...make it more about the girls. Hopefully. ohwell

You are such a good aunt. She is lucky to have someone like you worrying about her well-being rather than whether she wins or not.

My little sister tried out for Miss Teen Iowa, and let me say it was all her idea, but there were mothers there calling their own daughter names, it was bad.

 If she's going to be in it, I would still love her to win. She has an angel voice and is a genuine sweet pea. I just don't want her to bring her competitive softball nature into something like this. We had a nice talk about it the other day and I think her head is in the right place...now anyway. I just don't want that to change. flowerforyou

Oh my...see, I'd rather her not see this. But that will not be happening to her. Any Moms doing that in front of my sister had better look out. noway

I don't see anything wrong with the pageants themselves, but when the parents go a little overboard...then it's not okay...Anywho,good luck with your niecebigsmile

Awww thanks hon! This looks like it will prove to be an experience anyway. I'd like it to be a good one, but we have to let them take their chances sometimes I guess.

Has anyone seen "Drop Dead Gorgeous" or "Little Miss Sunshine"?

I like the way the protagonists in both movies consider and treat beauty pageants. I think as long as they're done tastefully and have contestants like those, then they're fine.

Just as long as your sister is doing it for the experience then its fine, some of the mothers were all "you need to do that to win" ours was "are you having fun?"

I'm not sure my sister really wants her to do it, she just doesn't want to tell her not to. ohwell I think she'll become more supportive as it unfolds though. I know she won't let the Moms bad mouth her daughter though...so look out. noway
