Hey! That's my class I'm taking right now. From what I've read in the text, you're right. They served their purpose, but they are really not needed (like they were). There may be some industries they still are. I don't know yet - only in my 1st week of class :)

But I am going for my Human Resource degree and from what I've seen - if you have a good company with a strong HR team, unions are unnecessary.

I fully agree, and they are more of a hinderance now than a help in many different ways.

Some seems to be, some do serve a purpose. I know that the local police officers union works pretty hard to help correctional officers out. And the teachers union is good at making sure school districts follow proper procedures and will back the teachers pretty hard to protect them from stupid reasons for firing. But sometimes, the unions have an attitude that I don't like.

So I don't think they are useless, but they could be better.

Our faculty union is worthless- it didn't do anything much for our faculty members

It depends on what you are expecting them to do for you. I work for the State Government part time and the union we have protected me from a very nasty episode of discrimination, racism, harassment and being terminated without cause. After not being allowed to work for three events and banned from state property I am now back to work. This would not have happened if we didn't have a union and a union contract.

What did I gain, I gained my self respect and the right to earn a living without being harassed etc.

Unions have their good and bad points but overall I believe they are good and beneficial to the majority of people. Many of the things workers take for granted now such as a 40 hour work week, paid vacations, sick days, unemployment compensation and many other things came about because unions fought to get them. Without unions these things probably would have never came to be.

It would have been great if our union was like that but sadly, it's just there for no reason at all. Our senior faculty members (retirees) were not given much justice. Their work loads were reduced (extra subject loads which should not have been touched by the uni admins), most of our fringe benefits were taken away and the list goes on. Alas.

I'd like to tell you a story. When I was younger, My father was a union president for years at the GE and he got me a job there as a white collar worker. I thought unions were useless and I was totally against them. One year working for the GE the union workers went on strike. Everyday I smiled and I crossed the picket line to work collected my paycheck and my father and I didn't speak for years after that.

When we finally resolved our differences he said that the reason wasn't because I had crossed the picket lines, it was because what those men and women sacrificed to get I received as well and never had enough sense to say thank you.
