Hypothetically... if I were insane would I actually be aware that I was?

Only if you compare yourself to others, you may realize if you are insane or not. Of course, there is also the mass-insanity factor. We could be all f-king insane and the people normal are actually the sane ones locked themselves away so we won't harm them.

edit: ohh why am i still awake at 2am to comment here?

See? If I'm insane, than you must be too, if you agree with me.

What if our underlying assumptions about what constitutes "sanity" vs. "insanity" are totally incorrect? What if they're based on perceptual evidence that has been tainted through the very limitations of those perceptive faculties?

Then you could draw disability for seeing things the way they are.

I think the most useful underlying assumption about what constitutes sanity vs. insanity ought not be placed and decided on subjective perception, but rather on declaring that an insane person loses most of his personal and societal survival functioning.

For example, eating red paint for walls is insane, because it kills the guy.

For another example, bullying everyone, screwing all the women and killing all other males is very advantageous for the SELF but it is detrimental for society.

---------

That's how I would decide, aside from looking at the guy's inner world.

What seems "insane" to me is people that go along with what our so called experts decide is "sanity" and don't question AND research for themselves. They go through life with a "yes, sir" "no, mam" attitude. They let others decide what is best for them. I'm not talking about the Special Needs people that we are obligated to take care of; but the ones that are too lazy to research something that is so easy now to look up...either at a library or on the internet. surprised

I often questioned my own sanity, until I met some friends who by telling about the people they've seen, made me realize just how sane I really am.

Going on the above remark,
people tend to hurd just like lemmings. One goes over a cliff, the others will often follow to their own doom.

I don't question. I know I am insane. It provides a nice escape from reality.

Insanity and self-awareness are not necessarily mutually exclusive....

Insanity actually depends on the culture and community...its the abnormal thought process of what are considered society norms. For instance..eating a trantula would be considered insane by us yet its considered normal by tribes.
A person who is clinically insane would not be aware that they are. Peoplewouldnt see an insane person admitting them selves to a facility, they would be admitted by someone else.
