for all of those who keep complaining about the rise of cost concerning fuel and other inports, I suggest you start thinking hard about wether or not to go to self sufficiency. By this I mean take a look at what I am doing, little by little.

1. I am moving up to no-mans land, so to speak, where I can get some decent acreage for a low cost next year. Then I am going to move a mobile home (yes a mobile home), onto a slab of concrete there. Once that is all hooked up, I am going to install either windmills or solar panels (or both) and start producing my own electricity, and convert the enitre house over to electrical.

I am also going to be growing my own vegetable garden, which I already do, and I will have an orchard with a couple different fruit trees, and maybe nut trees as well.

I am going to get my hunting licnse, and my "pest control" license (or whatever it is called) and I am going to hunt for the majority of my meat. I am also going to start fishing on an almost daily tiemframe, and thus add fish to my diet.

No, it is not all going to happen at once. I am hoping to be completely one hundred percent self sufficient within ten years though, and once I am, I am staying that way.

It is not as hard a lifestyle as most people would think it would be, its just that it is not compatable with city-life, or with holding a normal job.

Well damn good! About time to see someone else doing SOMETHING for themselves! drinker drinker drinker

I already switched over to solar over a year ago. Cut down fuel and utility costs by at least 63%. I use mass transit whenever my schedule allows (which is often) plus the walks/runs are good exercise.

I am debt free, therefore the economy can collapse without me having a worry.

So I am with you brother, just a little further ahead of the game, only because I seen this coming sooner and prepared. but you will make it and you are making a VERY SMART MOVE!!! Always great to see someone use thier BRAINS these days..its so rare anymore. drinker drinker drinker flowerforyou

lol.......

I would not mind setting up a small village where everyone helped everyone out. You know, where you have your village farmers, your village huntsman, woodsman, baker, carpenter, etc.

Teach the kids during the winter months when you cant produce, then they help out on the farm and in the woods during the spring, summer and fall...

My main problem was coming up withthe intitial money for the move, and beginning. Thanks to my kids government checks though from their mothers disability, I pretty much have it all set aside now to start. And no one can tell me that I am not using that money in their best interest by doing any of this. We are GOING to be in just as bad a depression as we were in the thirties, if not worse, and I intend on being prepared for it.

I am also going to build my ownhouse eventually, and I intend to have a few spare rooms that I can "rent/lease" to others, in order to give them a place to start, as long as they are going to help out with the idea of the village mind-set.

Then once we have a feww people there, we can all get together when we, the new people, (lol) agree to have someone around, and help get them in there and set up in a way that will help the whole community out.

Interdependence is and ought to be as much the ideal of man as self-sufficiency. Man is a social being.

Great idea! I hope it works out for you.

That would be great to start a small village like that as well, maybe that's something you could do in the future.

I've thought about doing something like that, I might do it myself some day.

Once again, I appaud your COMMON SENSE!! drinker drinker

I understand the initial cost factor, however, if needed you should actually even borrow that if you must, because it will actually pay for itself in a SHORT amount of time!

With the cost of fuels and energy now, solar and wind pay for themselves VERY QUICKLY and are VERY SIMPLE to install/use.

This change along with CONSERVATION can even escalate your benefits even more in so many ways..not just money! You will also be teaching your children EXTREMELY VALUABLE things in LIFE that most kids will never learn today.

So your plans are WISE and hand those things down to your children and your entire family will be able to benefit from YOU!!! drinker drinker drinker

very true jedi-girl.

And forgive me for using outdated forms and such, but when the vilages pulled otgether, and women did the cooking, and other "womanly jobs" while the men did theirs, things were very well off.

Now, as I said, forgive the mention to outdated fashions, lol. I am not saying I believe in woman having their jobs/place verse the men having theirs. We can still diversify it out where each family is happy and content with their individual role as well as their community role.

try to learn to trap game. once you do that, you can fence in what you catch and no longer have to hope you can find them in the wild.

Dragoness...why can't you?? You may not be able to move, but the use of certain things, like solar/wind..can be a great help these days, even in the city. flowerforyou

I thought about the loans,. but with my credit I cant get them. Eventhough I hope to install enough to where I am producing enough to start selling the extra to the state. I have read where a few people have done just that. They decided to go self-sufficient and ended up producing so much, the utility companies actually owe them every month.

I am going to be checking into grants and such once I have settled in up in new york.

I believe in going green whether its converting to hydrogen or solar power. Recycling, and cutting down on all emmisions that harm the atmosphere. But to say your going to move to no mans land grow your own crops and hunt your own food I think only harms everybody else. The less you spend in this economy the worse itl get and the cost of fuel will only increase. Plus this isn't hunter gather times this 2008. Nobody want to hunt their own food.

LOL, you don't have to be anti-social to be able to be a conservationist. All a conservationist does is "conserve resources". So has absolutely nothing to do with social interaction or behaviors. bigsmile flowerforyou
