ok first...oil is traded on a world market....not locally.....we barter the oil we cannot refine for oil that already is...(northern slope oil is sold to china.....the US is shipped from south america..... ) picture this 47 guys and gals sit in a room trading paper back and forth.....a boycott if it worked will only hurt the US economy...

I just recieved a text from a good friend seems the people want to get their point acrossed .
On May 2nd the nation is planning a gas strike . dont buy gas on that day ... pass it on
And dont give me greif about this just passing it on also .
and I will be pertisapating ... have a nice day see ya's tonight after work .. drinker

Nice idea, but one day is not going to be effective in making the oil companies recognize the strike....you have to plan for long term so it really hits them in the wallet.

This has been done before, and it simply isn't gonna work.

Why? Well...

- a one-day gasoline boycott is considered a drop-in-the-bucket next to the BILLIONS of bucks big oil makes on a daily basis. They'll only start making their money again on the following day. Some statistics state that for a boycott to TRULY be successful, the boycott-to-be would have to go on for the better part of a month or more. And -unless you'd be willing to NOT drive for that long- that probably isn't in the cards.

- some of the less-informed out there will go ahead and get gas on the "boycott" day anyway, which would pretty much negate any of the impact a boycott would have anyway. So the oil companies are gonna see at least SOME profit even in light of a boycott.

- since gasoline is bought via wholesale markets as well as through franchises (the gas stations), chances are that it'll be the gas station owners (and NOT the oil companies) who would feel the pinch first. And THAT would only happen after a boycott lasting longer than a day.

The only way to have a realistic chance of side-stepping the oil companies is to make investments in REAL energy alternatives, and not any of that flash-in-the-pan ethanol stuff (which would only interfere with grain supplies meant for human/animal consumption more than anything else)... like the rather interesting technology that was being developed in San Diego that used electricity to break apart water to oxygen and hydrogen, in essence making a "safe" kind of fuel cell.

It's just too bad that the fella who developed THAT technology was found murdered in his home not too long ago. Gee... I wonder who would do such a thing... *shakes head*

Absolutely true. Especially when you factor in the increased profits to the oil companies the day before and the day after the "strike."
so why can t we just stop the thinking that there is nothing we as a people can do about it , its our god giving right as an american and as a people ... isnt it what our nations building blocks were began on ... controled by the people for the peopke ... we have been tricked into believing that there is nothing that can be done . i dont believe that for a minute ... remember hands acrossed america ? i was there it was great ... i stood on the washington bridge think this nation is just to cool ... WE The People ... its what its about ,

Oh... there ARE ways to get back at big oil. For starters, the government needs to stop with the totally BS subsidies that they lavish upon the oil companies- if anything, they're using our tax dollars to do their daily operations with while they make mondo profits via other means. In fact, big oil had gone so far as to threaten to raise fuel prices even HIGHER if those subsidies were taken away.

The government needs to stop getting cozy with big oil, too. After all, it's the government that has been doling out said subsidies to begin with- and they aren't doing it out of the goodness of their hearts, either.

And- like I said earlier- the REAL way to get back at big oil would be to develop some REAL alternative forms of energy, like the "safe" water-to-oxygen-and-hydrogen fuel technology I had talked about. It's probably the only energy technology that has a chance to make it to the mainstream, as it's evidently VERY cheap to produce, AND it the cost-of-production numbers are almost nothing.

Ethanol would be nice, but the costs simply outweigh the benefits. Wind and geothermal energy will help, but not in amounts to make a difference. And solar energy isn't advanced enough for us to be able to power whole cities with it.

People will need to plan long-term to make this work and that will require sacrifice and serious reformation of the daily commute. How many, do you think, will be willing to make those adjustments? Come up with a convenient plan...since Americans are all about the convenience now and not so ready to give that up. We are a bunch of greedy bastards these days.

yeah and if we didnt destroy all the farmers and bankrupt them we would have enough golden oil to be self efficient ... and the only problem we had with the gasohol aka ethanol was it clogged fuel injectors well guess what ... they are now being clogged by the additives used in our fuel to make it burn cleaner ... ever been told you need new injectors ?
that would be why ... and guess what again Ethanol burns clean . car companies have since improved the system to handle the additives and they can handle Ethanol..
Where is John Cougar Melloncamp when we need him ... smokin

I've gotten a ton of these. In order to be effective it would have to be for more than one day and everybody would have to do it. Otherwise you're only hurting the local owners and they don't control the prices. The big fish do.

Logistical improbability, shallow pockets vs deep pockets...but I'll do it out of pure spite. Don't forget to buy something else at a Mom & Pop, no need to hurt the little guy.
