What I find amusing is that so many other religious rites or traditions teter so close to what the bible tells us in so many ways. I have read so many other things that have the almost exact same things in different ways of speaking. Even the American Indians have religious traditions and beliefs that are so very close. Kat |

It goes without saying that Christianity and Judaism have a lot in common. If you look at the dissimilarities between Christianity and all other religions you will see why the "similarity" arguments were dropped by most many years ago. |

Myth is derived from the Greek word mythos, which means "word of mouth." In the academic fields of mythology, mythography, or folkloristics, a myth is a sacred story concerning the origins of the world or how the world and the creatures in it came to be in their present form. The active beings in myths are generally gods and heroes. Myths often are said to take place before recorded history begins. In saying that a myth is a sacred narrative, what is meant is that a myth is believed to be true by people who attach religious or spiritual significance to it. Use of the term by scholars does not imply that the narrative is either true or false. The point is that before a tradition is written down, it must be researched. And that is what the sacred authors did. The gospel of Luke shows us that in the first couple of verses. The author made a research about the facts that were told to him through oral tradition, and he put them in a logical order to show the intended audience (greeks)that whatever they were taught it was based upon real facts. Even after the gospels were written they were not fully accepted by the Church until several hundred years after they were written because the Church itself made a research an study of the text to show its veracity. There was no "research" done, unless you are meaning that Luke was only assuring that he got the stories right...If you will recall, the "bible" was made up of many, many stories, gospels, etc..what has come to be known as the Old Testament was merely a selection of those gospels which served the interests of the new and not quite established church From where I stand, the bible is just another great mythology. i'm very tired physically, mentally, and emotionally to even think, but in between all my tireness i find a huge flaw in this argument. It's impossible that the old testament is a selection of gospels just because gospels are just four and they just refer to the Lord. If you want to argue with a little bit more of verbal specificity, you should say a selection of stories or tales. Just a little help for you to state your atheist arguments in a little bit clearer way. |

If you want to argue with a little bit more of verbal specificity, you should say a selection of stories or tales. Just a little help for you to state your atheist arguments in a little bit clearer way. The Bible is the collection of religious writings of Judaism and of Christianity. The exact composition of the Bible is dependent on the religious traditions of specific denominations. Modern Rabbinic Judaism generally recognizes a single set of canonical books that comprise the Tanakh, the Jewish version of the Bible. The Christian Bible includes the same books as the Tanakh (referred to in this context as the Old Testament), but in a different order, together with specifically Christian books collectively called the New Testament. Among some Christian traditions, the Bible includes additional Jewish books that were not accepted into the Tanakh. The Hebrew Bible comprises three parts: the Torah ("Teaching", also known as the Pentateuch or "Five Books of Moses"), the Prophets, and the Writings. It was primarily written in Hebrew with some small portions written in Aramaic. The Christian Bible includes the twenty-seven books of the New Testament, which were originally written in Greek, preceded by the protocanonical books of the Old Testament and sometimes a number of deuterocanonical books: Eastern Orthodox Churches use all of the books that were incorporated into the Septuagint, the earliest Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible; Roman Catholics include some of these books in their canon; and many Protestant Bibles follow the Jewish canon, excluding the additional books. Some editions of the Christian Bible have a separate Biblical apocrypha section for books not considered canonical. this little bit of "research" came from Wikipedia (emphasis mine) |

one day a kid in college presented a paper citing his sources from wikipedia, and the teacher tore apart the paper in his face and told the kid. please do not bring garbage to my class. Wikipedia is getting better. Like google, it improves all the time. The powers that have always had control of information and education don't like it that is for sure. When I can't find information anywhere else I have found it there. It may not have the stamp of approval of some college professors, but that does not make the information invalid. Bad or wrong information does not last long on there. People are the best source of information while sometimes books fall short or are slanted or are given too much credibility where they do not deserve it. I felt the same at first, but no any more. Of course I'm not writing a term paper. In college you are taught to be a cog in the wheel and if you don't agree with what they are trying to teach, you will not pass the grade. JB |

What is The Bible?
The Bible is a collection of 66 individual books that together tell the story of a group of people bound by a common faith in God. It is divided into two main sections: the Old Testament containing 39 books originally written primarily in Hebrew, and the New Testament containing 27 books originally written primarily in Greek. For Presbyterians and others of the Reformed tradition the Bible is the means by which Christian believers come to understand how God has been present with humanity since the beginning of time and is present in our world today. By studying the scriptures we can begin to know of God's faithfulness, constant love and eternal goodness. Source:http://www.pcusa.org/101/101-bible.htm |

The Bible is a collection of 66 books written by about 40 authors, in three different languages, on three different continents, over approximately 1600 years. The Bible claims to be inspired and inerrant. This means that the Bible claims to be from God and that it is without error in everything it addresses.
The Bible contains many different styles of writing such as poetry, narration, fiction, history, law, and prophecy and must be interpreted in context of those styles. It is the source of the Christian religion in that the Bible contains the words of God and how the Christian is to apply the words of God to his life. source:http://www.carm.org/seek/Bible.htm |
