A concept of Morals
I’m thinking specifically of sexual morals. The pope made the comment that the U.S. was in desperate need of moral guidance. At least, that is how one article worded it. I can’t help but think that was what he was referring to. There are some other moral issues the U.S. has developed that are ishy. I mean, it has gotten to the point that people think the right to freedom should be right to do whatever you want even if it harms others. That might be going to far. But really, Most of the sexual morals were really a way to transition from a matrilineal society to a patrilineal one. It was a way to control populations and really, when it all comes down to it, inheritance rights. There is reasonable and not reasonable. Sex with minors is a no-no is reasonable. Saying that all sex in any other position by missionary is unreasonable. Saying that the only legitimate form of sexual activity is in marriage is unreasonable. That goes back to control of property and money issues. When it comes down to it, anything that comes down to issues of money and property and inheritance is an unreasonable control of sexuality. Even when hidden under the disguise of religion. Issues that come down to protecting people from exploitation are reasonable controls and laws. Yeah, the news has been making me think a lot lately. |

Sex outside of marriage is immoral. I don't think it should be against the law, but it is immoral.
Sex outside of marriage: Spreads disease Creates single parents Breaks hearts Raises the divorce rate Increases poverty Increases the number of abortions There is absolutely no social advantage to pre-marital or extra-marital sex. It's a personal decision, but there is definitely a correct choice. |

Lack thereof/aka "be fruitful and multiply" in unbridled fashion also increases societal impact of all of the issues you site. I think the real problem we have is overpopulation of the planet. There are only so many resources to be had. |

Using religion to control behavior is wrong. Education about not being purely stupid makes more sense. It isn't a religious issue. |

Hey Deb:
It just dawned on me that you spell realise with an "s." It makes sense now, as I know you hail from the UK. That IS the way a proper Englishman/woman spells it now isn't it? |

There is absolutely no social advantage to pre-marital or extra-marital sex. From my first post... I got lazy on my later post, but both pre-marital and extra-marital sex would be "sexual immorality". Birth control is taboo by religious standards in general however. Lack thereof/aka "be fruitful and multiply" in unbridled fashion also increases societal impact of all of the issues you site. I think the real problem we have is overpopulation of the planet. There are only so many resources to be had. For Catholics, yes. But most Christians believe that "Go forth and multiply" was a commandment to Adam and Eve, it's not a commandment to all humans. If people were responsible and used birth control and condoms, then most things on your list would be eliminated. It would reduce the numbers of some of the items on my list, but none of them would be eliminated. maybe so..but it isnt immoral...its human nature...wether you decide to be clever or stupid is the question Yes, it is by definition immoral. Maybe you aren't sure what the definition of immoral is? |
