Do we still have that in this country?? Or has Bush taken that away from us too.

I made a comment the other day about how I don't like GB and my boss overheard and called me into his office trying to reprimand me for what I said. I looked at him and said, Its freedom of speech and walked out.

Just wanted to check to make sure I still had that freedom???

Well, that's not really what Freedom of Speech means.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

What you're talking about isn't a case of Congress passing a law, but a case of a property owner and their choice of what is and isn't said on their property.

and there is freedom to terminate you from your employment for any reason they see fit as long as it isn't due to discrimination. You work for your employer, and at his whim unless you have a contract, or are in a union. Some conversations are not suibtable for places of employment, and politics are one of them. People get emotional over them, and it can have an affect on productivity, and moral. Leave the politics for starbucks, and conversations with those you know

huh well...I say screw that noise...I provide a valuable service and as long as they recieve the results contracted for, that's that. No one has a right to tell me what to think or say about politics or anything beyond the confines of the precise service that I'm providing.smokin

If they think they DO have that right, they can kiss my lily white azz... drinker

Yah, there's quite a few professions I wouldn't consider it to be appropriate to talk about politics while in the function of your profession.

When I was in the Marines, for example, we couldn't attend political events in uniform. On our own time, it was fine.

the point i guess is just becasue you shouldnt say something at work doesnt mena you dont have the freedom of speech...

I had a friend who worked for pepsi it was a job.. he has drinking coke his entire life. he brought a coke to work in his lunch and got fired.. it was against the rules.. it doesnt mean he didnt have the freedom to drink coke

speech is never free
but often discounted
and some is certainly cheaper than others

you are certainly entitled to your opinion
and you are also entitled to voice it any
place you like. however, others are also
entitled to be distressed, disgruntled,
disinterested, disgusted and even peeved
with your opinions.

as any good comedian will tell you - it is
vital to know your audience.

i'd just chalk it up to a slip of the tongue
and keep it light and not too serious around the
water cooler. beware of the sacred cow crossing...

Most jobs realize there are two things that are not good for moral on the work front, politics and religion. So he may have been trying to stop it before it became an issue. When you are on the clock, you are on their time and they pay you for it. Keep politics and religion out of the work place and you will fair well. JMO of courseflowerforyou

I had a contract to go into an office building and install a computer network a while back. I decided to try out a guy, to run the wiring through the buildings. I was paying him 3 times what he was used to being paid, because I had seen him work before and believed he could get the job done in the time frame I needed, and he was very particular and detail oriented.
I had several other jobs in line too.. and could have kept him gainfully employed for at least 9 months to a year... and introduce him to a fairly lucrative trade.

It seemed he was under the impression I hired him to spread his political views. I found him engaging anybody who would listen. This was disruptive behavior..It was not getting the job done and it created more of an impedance to the offices we were working in, then our presence should have created.

When I tried to discuss it with him.. He brought up my 'limiting his freedom of speech'! He also said that he had observed me talking to people in the office quite a bit.. and saw no reason why I can and he can't. Completely omitting the fact that I was the owner of the business he was working for and not considering that I was probably discussing the progress of the job with the people it was effecting.
A few hours later.. I brought somebody else in to do the work. Handed him a few hundred for his time and told him he did not have to go home, but could not stay there.

Later that year, I ran into him at a local Mini Mart, working behind the counter. The owner was a security system client of mine. I learned later that month that he managed to get terminated from that job too.. For inappropriate dialog with customers.

In other words.... There is a time and a place for everything! Not being able to distinguish when and where a behavior is not appropriate... can severely impede your ability to pay your rent and feed your face.
